Amazing day yesterday at the Dyslexia Summit at Fairleigh Dickinson. All of the speakers were amazing and informative. Followed by an incredible dinner with some of the best dyslexia advocates! So happy to be a part of Parents for Reading Justice NJ, we will do great things.

Why are children held back for not reading when the system failed to teach them? Many parents beg for evaluations. They see how the “data” doesn’t match reality. But the system tells us to keep waiting and watching, even when we know targeted early intervention is best. This isn’t about blaming teachers, it’s about accountability. We must stop punishing children for systemic failure.

Some say that holding 8-year-olds back a grade because they can’t read will negatively impact their “self-esteem”. What about the “self-esteem” of students when they become 18-year-olds who graduate from high school illiterate because they were just moved through the system?

5 years ago, my son’s dyslexia diagnosis changed the way I teach. It sparked years of learning, unlearning, and advocacy. As we head into 2026, my hope is for continued action rooted in evidence-based literacy, early screening, and early intervention. Grateful for this community!

There’s so much focus on the Littles (K–3), but when we see that the science of reading works, we have a moral obligation to go back and help the kids we failed. It’s not convenient and it can be scary, but it’s the right thing to do. Margaret Goldberg told me about a school where, after embracing science-based reading, teachers reached out to older students and started tutoring them after school. What a beautiful act of healing for student and teacher. We leave no one on the battlefield. @kjwineducation @reading_league @dyslexiaIDA @parentsunion @right2read edweek.org/teaching-learn…

@Eduventuring04 I’ve had to fight for morphology. Finally getting it this year, but it shouldn’t have to be a battle.

@MichelleBethe Which is why I believe morphology is a solid switch in approach. Breaking the word into morpheme you can still focus on spellings and concepts kids are spiraling on in the IMSE sequence while also ensuring they are practicing grade level words and rigor

My dyslexic daughter (now in 5th gr) has received intervention labeled as Orton Gillingham since 1st grade Her interventionist is brilliant, caring, and followed it with fidelity I can tell you now, it failed her and here’s why 🧵 (Spoiler this is pro phonics, pro HQIM)

@Eduventuring04 I think it is the program too. They have to reach a certain percentage to move on to the next concept.

@MichelleBethe That describes her cohort. I’m honestly making the biased assumption that is a program issue not a teacher issue (I could be wrong) I’ve seen the same with Wilson though so curious if it’s genuinely the approach and some kids just need sound to print instead

@Eduventuring04 I guess it also depends on who is implementing also. I’ve seen students get stuck on the lower level concepts for a very long time.

@MichelleBethe Their morphology is good for surface level learning I guess but I wouldn’t recommend past 3rd grade given what it is Better morphology resources out there (morpheme magic as one example)

@MichelleBethe 👀 I’m curious what the data country wide looks like for districts with that specific program compared to others

This lack of next step will cause stagnat scores, and then finger pointing at “SoR” and then a pendulum swing. We have k-2 right. We need the next step

Schools have built systems that normalize waiting. “Let’s see how they do next year.” “Maybe they’ll grow into it.” Meanwhile, the gap widens. Early action isn’t optional, it’s equity. @ChadAldeman says it best: Do. Not. Wait. chadaldeman.com/p/do-not-wait
