This is incredibly simple: if students want to start a Turning Point USA club, great. They have a constitutional right to do so. But that is wildly different than the governor abusing his position to try and force every high school to have one. Beyond unacceptable.

Take a moment to look at the inhumanity captured in this extraordinary photo running on the front page of tonight's Minneapolis @StarTribune. It shows federal immigration agents immobilizing a protester on the ground and spraying chemical irritant directly into his face. The scene reminds me of the brutality used against civil rights protesters in the 1960s. We look back at those old photos and wonder how the authorities could have behaved so savagely; many years from now, young Americans will look at these photos from 2026 and wonder how anyone could have justified shooting a woman in the head as she tried to drive away, arresting 5-year-old schoolchildren on the street, or holding a man down and spaying chemicals into his face. Thanks to the Star Tribune reporters and photographers for documenting this work; they create accountability, they make democracy work, and they make all of us in journalism proud.

Most Republicans are good people. Most Democrats are good people. The White House says outrageous things to make you hate your neighbor. Your neighbor isn’t the problem. The White House is.

No, Speaker Johnson: The No Kings Rally on October 18 is not a “hate America” rally. Quite the contrary. It’s a rally of millions of people who believe in American freedom and are not going to allow you and President Trump to turn us into an authoritarian country.

The President gets no special new powers during a shutdown. He can't eliminate agencies. He can't use federal funds to punish his political opponents. As Trump's illegality grows during the shutdown, Democrats' spines should stiffen to oppose his corruption.

It really shouldn't be that difficult to strike a deal between Republicans and Democrats to reopen our government. Compromise isn't a dirty word. As elected leaders, it's what you're expected to do. The voters will reward you. What I'd say to each of them is: Republicans: You've already said you're willing to work on the Obamacare subsidies, just do it now to get a deal done. Democrats: Focus on securing a solution for the subsidies and debate the larger agenda issues during the midterm elections next year.
