French thieves have stolen a one-tonne bronze statue of a Scottish piper from the 51st Highland Division A memorial to British soldiers who died liberating France on D-Day. The statue stood in the grounds of Château St Come at Bréville-les-Monts, north of Caen, where the Highlanders fought fierce battles alongside the 6th Airborne Division after storming Juno Beach in June 1944. It was ripped off its plinth and loaded onto a vehicle in a planned overnight raid on Friday, just one week before the 82nd D-Day anniversary commemorations. Locals and the town council described the theft as “shameful”, with police in Merville-Franceville now investigating. Officers believe scrap-metal dealers may have targeted the valuable bronze. The site is near Pegasus Bridge and was known locally as “Death Alley” due to the heavy fighting that claimed 110 men from the Black Watch alone in just two days. British visitors were due to gather at the statue next Saturday to remember the liberators. Bastards!

Few professions carry a burden as heavy as farming. Farmers feed everyone. Every single person. Every child heading to school. Every worker beginning a shift. Every patient in a hospital bed. The government is so busy trying to replace gas fired power with windfarms, it has forgotten we will need lots more electricity to power their net zero world and to allow growth. Bad news they cannot offer enough electricity to expand Heathrow and all the datacentres we need.
