Marie Curie (1867-1934) was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person to win twice, and the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two different sciences: Physics and Chemistry.
Often regarded as the mother of modern physics, Curie became the first woman in France to earn a PhD, while not being permitted to attend college due to the gender.
Marie Curie, along with her husband Pierre Curie, discovered the elements polonium and radium. The name "polonium" is a tribute to Marie's homeland, Poland. The couple shared a nobel prize in 1903 for their work on radioactivity, and then Marie won her 2nd Nobel prize in 1911 for her discovery of radium and polonium.
