NEWS: Officers and investigative staff at Central Michigan Correctional Facility took action to protect those incarcerated from potential illness, overdose, or violence associated with the use of contraband substances.

The DDC was opened on Aug. 1, 2013, and operated under an interagency agreement between the Detroit Police Department (DPD) and MDOC during the last 12 years. The DDC holds all pre-arraigned detainees 17 years of age or older in the City of Detroit for up to 72 hours.

FACILITY UPDATE: Following passage by the legislature and the Detroit City Council, the department has transitioned operation of the Detroit Detention Center (DDC) to the City of Detroit as of today, August 1, 2025.

Vocational Village is a first-of-its-kind program that aims to give prisoners intensive, hands-on job training experience, to prepare them for high-demand careers upon reentry.

WPR also interviewed Marcos Fernandez who spent more than 13 years in custody, graduated from the Vocational Village welding program, and now owns his own company where he is employing hiring graduates of the program.
