The gutting of Chicago’s news stations is disastrous. It’s bad for the city, residents and future generations of journalists. Increasingly, journalists need to be a “brand” or else you’re expendable. This is bad. Worse, schools are in denial about this and aren’t adapting.

Politicians now have to correctly foreshadow tragic events that happen 6 months in the future or it becomes a fabricated news story. There’s a lot of room for criticism of our leaders on this horribly sad story, but this is absurd.

Not sure why a six-month-old video is relevant here — especially since it was filmed near 35th Street on the south lakefront, nowhere near the far North Side beach where Sheridan Gorman was killed. This feels like nothing more than rage bait.

@AJManaseer That is not what I said though. I said, "there is LOTS of room to criticize our leaders for this horribly sad story" without resurfacing an old video the counters this extremist narrative that the entire lakefront is a crime-ridden hellhole.

@Micky_Horstman I disagree. If you go out of your way to dunk on Trump and make a video mentioning how safe a specific area is, and then there’s a murder there a few months later perpetrated by the exact kind of person Trump warned about? No. JB deserves all the criticism and then some.

I'll add — I'm all for people writing opinion pieces. It's great that there's a platform for a bunch of different perspectives in depth. But it isn't the same thing as sharing comment with or answering questions from a reporter. Powerful people should respond to reporters.
