Interesting meeting and engaged conversation today with @KemiBadenoch, @LauraTrottMP and her team (of Plan 2 loan holders). We chatted for an hour about the system & options and hopefully something positive will come of it. Good to talk to the opposition as most of my meets are usually with ministers. For me, in the short term the most important thing is the govt reverse its freeze of the repayment threshold.

My career was defined by 9/11. Across multiple frontline deployments I worked alongside my US colleagues. On my first day in Afganistan, I walked into my unit to hear on the radio net that a Royal Marine (Cpl Seth Stephens) whose mission we supported had been killed. I went on to travel across Afghanistan to places like Herat, Bagram and Jalalabad, far beyond most Brits, but always with my US colleagues. In Iraq I operated across Basra and Baghdad, carrying out highly sensitive work with the US community. I also watched many coffins of young British servicemen & women, be flown home. In London as an out of hours duty officer in MOD, in the small hours of the night I was often woken to be told of British KIA, and in turn notified No10 and Ministers offices that another UK service person had died on operations. In the morning I had to tell Ministers offices how many had been injured over the weekend, including triple amputees. The butchers bill was always high. I have dedicated years of my adult life deployed on operations across the world as part of the War on Terror. When America called for help, I was one of many who answered the call, finding reasons to go, not excuses to stay and put my life on hold to help others. I am saddened that anyone could think we were not on the front line alongside my American friends. Trust me, we were there and we gave everything we had for America, when America needed us.

@YorkshireWater surely the 6 months ban on hosepipes must be at an end? Even with a very dry spring/summer, it has restlessly rained with numerous Met Office flood warnings. Your ‘in a few weeks’ leaves customers totally unsighted

Congratulations to new Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado for her courageous struggle to bring democracy to Venezuela. It should inspire those engaged in similar struggles around the world - and remind those of us lucky enough to live in America that we have a solemn responsibility to constantly preserve and defend our own hard-won democratic traditions.
