Today, following the third year of the devastating civil war in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control imposed sanctions on a network recruiting and deploying former Colombian military personnel to Sudan to fight on behalf of the Rapid Support Forces. This conflict has given rise to one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises and famines.

No money for the Iranian regime.

When the Biden administration worked to open up billions of dollars in cash to subsidize a regime that spends money on terrorism and terrorist groups, nuclear weapons development, long-range missiles and repression of the Iranian people, many of us screamed bloody murder -- and with good reason, because it was money to fund bloody murder. Biden admin talkers at the time pushed back and said the money would only be used for "non-sanctionable purposes" and that no money would transfer into Iran. They created a legal fiction where the regime could draw on billions of dollars in accounts in Oman and Qatar to pay their debts and finance their imports -- which of course meant money was available elsewhere for illicit activities. Many of us rightly called BS -- money is fungible -- we aren't stupid. Now it's true that between Operation Midnight Hammer and Operation Epic Fury, we have done enormous damage to the regime's ability to pour money into missiles and nuclear weapons work -- they'd need to spend the money on reconstitution over many years. But the rump regime has not renounced terrorism and has not abandoned its repression of the Iranian people. So we should be clear that every new dollar of sanctions relief opened up for the regime would free up a dollar to spend on bloody murder. And any sanctions waiver issued in connection with a nuclear agreement would trigger INARA and congressional review prior to the waiver being allowed.

I was pleased to be at the Italian Chamber of Deputies to meet with a cross-party delegation of MPs. We discussed the moral responsibility Italy and Europe have to back Iranians' demand for human rights, religious freedom, Internet access, and an end to the Islamic Republic.
