A team can contend for a Cup without one of a franchise center or a Norris Trophy caliber defenseman. But without either... well, that's a mighty tall order. That's a big part of why the Flyers gave the OS to Carlsson; a perfect 1C fit and young to boot. They are back to where they were beforehand: a team with more quality pieces than some realize. They are building depth and have youth on wings but no true 1C or elite D man at the core of nucleus.
