The US is in trouble The longer traffic through the Strait of Hormuz looks like a dead man’s EKG, the higher the likelihood that countries start tapping their US asset holdings to fund urgent domestic needs. Europe, Asia, and the Middle East are hit the hardest... and these same regions hold the majority of US assets, including Treasuries. Projected GDP losses in the GCC: - Qatar: 14% - Kuwait: 14% - UAE: 5% - Saudi: 3% These losses will need to be offset somehow... The US financial system relies on these countries running surpluses and recycling them into US markets. If that flow reverses, yields rise and financial conditions tighten rapidly. The surge in interest rates we’ve already seen are just the beginning if this situation persists.
