Alberto Del Rio has never been short of controversy, and a story from over 11 years ago in Japan serves as a reminder that this habit stretches back further than some may remember. Del Rio was scheduled to face Masakatsu Funaki in Wrestle-1 at the Ryogoku Kokugikan. Funaki had arrived with genuine goodwill towards his opponent. Del Rio's father is Dos Caras, whose older brother is Mil Máscaras, the very wrestler who first made Funaki fall in love with pro wrestling. "I hoped we could have a memorable match," Funaki recalled on his YouTube channel. That goodwill evaporated quickly. Del Rio's promotional comments - "I am of noble blood, so commoner wrestlers are no match for me" - left a sour taste before they had even shared a ring. Then came the day itself. 30 minutes before bell time, an uproar broke out. Del Rio had entered the venue and then completely vanished. The show started without him. Match after match concluded while wrestlers, the moment they finished competing, split up to comb the building. The hotel reported no sign of him. The possibility of a cancellation announcement during intermission was being prepared. Arrangements were already in motion. He was found during the interval. Asleep. In the boiler room of the Ryogoku Kokugikan. "He's certainly a carefree man to be sleeping in a boiler room," Funaki said, the fury barely contained beneath the words. "If I think of that as a tactic used against me, it makes me incredibly angry all over again." He went into the match carrying all of that - and lost in 8 minutes and 32 seconds when Del Rio grabbed his tights for a schoolboy pin which infuriated him even more. Funaki's post-match press conference was unfiltered. "A guy like that isn't a professional. Don't mess with me. He's dragging his father's name through the mud. Do you know how many hours we spent looking for him? Every wrestler who finished their match was out searching. It's ridiculous. Dos Caras Jr. is finished. For me, it's just Máscaras. Only Máscaras. Never again. I will never be involved with him again. Never." Reflecting later, Funaki delivered the verdict that cut deepest of all. "No matter how good a family you are born into, no matter how great your parents are, or how wonderful your talent is - if your daily conduct is not good, this is what happens.
