A thread and article about consciousness that's well worth reading. An interesting angle is to criticize certain definitions of consciousness by using mechanistic explanations of behavior based on the connectome.

Is this microscopic worm sentient? It’s a tough question! Increasingly, however, neuroscience is providing insights into the physical correlates of consciousness at the scale of individual neurons, and we should be excited about what it has to offer. A thread and and article.

I was immensely honoured to give an invited talk on grief and loss at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology at the McCormick Centre in Chicago last week! #ASCO25 #asco2025 really privileged to collaborate with @keri_brenner and @nathanson_abby on this!

@Ljiljana1972 Just saw Night Hawks at the Chicago Art Institute. Strangely very small collection of American art. This, American Gothic and a couple of rooms fairly little known paintings. But amazing for European Impressionism!

Hopper. Hopper is the painter of loneliness. American loneliness, that is. But American loneliness is the quintessence of human loneliness.

When @MikolajRode and I starting the Humane Philosophy Society a decade ago, our only aim was intellectual fun (definitely achieved). It is so great to reflect on how much more it has become and, with the support of people like @matraszek, the amazing future that lies ahead

When I first read Gettier, I thought it was supposed to be an example of justified true belief without knowledge, but for reasons which turned out to be mistaken

I was delighted and honoured to give two lectures earlier this week at two of the largest auditoriums in Oxford and Cambridge: the Mathematics Institute and Lady Mitchell Hall. Thank you to Julie Arliss and @AC_Learning_ for organising these spectacularly successful events!

There's been lots of discussion about students using AI to write essays, but less about us using AI to grade them. So, here's something I have written about the future of AI essay grading in universities advance-he.ac.uk/news-and-views… @AdvanceHE

Just finished some light holiday reading: this excellent book on the mind-body problem by @RalphStefanWeir. A very convincing rebuttal of the myth that substance dualism is just a Cartesian mistake, and a compelling case for rejecting our contemporary soul-phobia.
