Dave Mason (CT ’25) has transformed Bacon Academy’s Manufacturing program into the largest elective in eastern Connecticut, with more than 130 students enrolled—including a third of them female. Benefiting from state-of-the-art equipment, students learn welding, machining, plasma cutting, metal fabrication and CNC operation, all while gaining the opportunity to receive college credit, earn pre-apprenticeship hours, and build industry relationships. No matter what avenue they pursue, students leave Mason’s class ready for the workforce and life. Andrea Yang, a graduate of Diamond Bar High School, is a Coolidge Senator Scholar, BuildGirls Scholar, and two-time President’s Volunteer Service Gold Awardee. She founded Starfly, an iOS app empowering girls in STEM, winning the Congressional App Challenge and named a RISE For the World Schmidt Futures Global Finalist. Through the Athena Initiative, Andrea raised $15,000+ to organize Los Angeles’ first girls-only high school hackathon and co-organized an inaugural international summit at SpaceX HQ. Brendon Wu, a graduate of Alhambra High School, is a @NASA GL4HS Research Fellow and Youth Advisory Board Member at @Harvard Making Caring Common. His project, Narco-Aegis, is one of five National Finalists in the U.S. Presidential AI Challenge. President of the Computer Science and STEM Olympiad Clubs and a Captain of the Speech & Debate Team, Brendon is also a State Champion in SkillsUSA Extemporaneous Speaking and Gold Medalist of the UK Biology Olympiad. Valeria Urbalejo, a graduate of Harbor Teacher Preparatory Academy, is a recipient of the College Board’s National First-Generation Recognition Award and the CA Gold Seal of Biliteracy. She served on the Region South Superintendent Student Advisory Council, where she implemented and managed a peer tutoring pilot. Valeria was co-editor of her school’s Journalism Club and a student journalist for the @USCAnnenberg Youth Academy, helping produce two professional news episodes. She founded a chapter of Cancer Kids First, an art program supporting pediatric cancer patients and participated in the Perry Initiative at @CedarsSinai, introducing girls to orthopaedics and biomedical engineering. He was captain of the varsity wrestling team and first-chair tenor saxophonist, recording in professional studios and traveling internationally to perform. Throughout his time in high school, Adrian volunteered with his neighborhood Fire Safe Council and Friends in Deed, distributing food to his Altadena community through the Eaton Fire. He founded GalaxSea Explorers, a nonprofit delivering free space education to 260,000+ low-income students worldwide, earning recognition from CBS News, Points of Light, and the Princeton Prize.
