Kevin Pritchard could have defended the trade with probability and game theory, and would have been mostly ignored. Instead he apologized, and now fans are saying “no, the ping pong balls and the NBA screwed us!”. This is the difference between KP and your average Ivy League GM.

@MillerTimePod Yes, and Zu didn't play much better over time as Kawhi ramped up and Harden needed to feed Kawhi more. He played worse. Clippers fans watched him regress. It was not bad, and I am never going to argue Zu is bad (others did and begged for him to be traded). But he was regressing.

Well first of all, scoring average =\= quality of play. You can score less and play much better, and Pacers fans are smart enough to know that. But also, Zu averaged 19.9/12.5/3 with a TS% over .65 in March and April when Kawhi missed four games total, so that’s not even true.
THE Yeti Moose@YetiMoose

@MillerTimePod A lot of Zu's season #'s are from Harden using Zu has his #1 option while Kawhi was out, and for the time Kawhi was playing injured on returning. Harden made Zu his project for a time. If you graphed Zu's season production you'd see he was playing worse as the season progressed.

Future generations will assume the early injury reports from the Pacers were the result of blatant tanking. But they played like it was still the NBA Finals, until the injuries and losses piled up too high to ignore. Pacers fans were mad that they WEREN’T tanking for months!
Caitlin Cooper@C2_Cooper

Seeing a lot of "The Pacers tanked w/o Tyrese, while Boston remained competitive despite not having Tatum most of the year" floating around, and I have some thoughts.

At the end of the day though, if Zu dominates the boards, springs Hali free consistently, slows down opposing centers, and is a menace rolling to and finishing at the rim — but averages like 13.5 points — sign me up.

@YetiMoose Haliburton is a pretty solid pick and roll passer himself, and he loves feeding his roll man. I think it will turn out okay.

@MillerTimePod And let me acknowledge up front I know there is nothing I can say to persuade Pacers fans this is true. I am just praying you remember this later, and are not too harsh in the backlash over Zu because he didn't do anything wrong. He works hard and is a good center.

DID YOU KNOW: Ivica Zubac got more All-NBA votes in the Finals season than Pascal Siakam did?

In fact, only 9 players in Pacers history have collected more total All-NBA votes in their Indiana careers than Zubac did that year. Notable players who fell short: Siakam Danny Granger Myles Turner Sabonis David West Jalen Rose Smits Chuck Person Mark Jackson Dale Davis

The NBA posts the entire, unedited lottery drawing immediately after the results reveal show is broadcast. They do it this way to make the reveal show more interesting, because broadcasting the actual lottery means they'd have to reveal who won first. youtube.com/watch?v=gCfBHz…

@MarkMontieth @NBA @Pacers Mark- why isn't the draft lottery totally transparent? Why is it hidden? I'm really curious

This is what fit in my browser. Worthy of note: Dwyane Wade was the next guy on the list, and is probably the best talking point for anyone worried about trading the 5th pick in a draft many think is loaded with talent.

This is a part of it for me, too. Dominating the boards, hard screens, tough buckets near the rim, one-on-one defense -- these are the kinds of things that should show up consistently in playoff crunch time. Screeners don't have cold streaks.
Jace (Belly De La Cruz)@OfficiallyJace

@YesCersss @MillerTimePod Myles was like 0/16 on wide open 3's in the Finals. I feel pretty confident that without any practice at all Zu can be better than that.

@YesCersss Pacers were 7th in pace the Finals year -- still fast, but they aren't 7 secs or less Suns. Pace slows down in the playoffs too. Great screens & rolling hard creates space too, and Pacers have plenty of shooting otherwise.

@MillerTimePod Yeah but our pace of play is what made the pacers dangerous. Do you think Zu can play at that same pace? Also as much as i hate Myles, him being a stretch 5 helped with spacing the floor and now teams don’t have to worry about guarding Zu past the 3 point line

You're looking at this the wrong way. It isn't that Indiana was desperate and had to overpay because of need. I think they have a belief that Zubac is a perfect fit who will have a much bigger impact than their other options, and placed a huge bet on the fact they're right.
Alex Golden@AlexGoldenNBA

Are we sure the Pacers couldn’t have acquired Zubac in the offseason and still kept their pick? I know that Mathurin and Jackson made the salaries match perfectly, but the trade haul was more for Zubac than Siakam. With Turner leaving in free agency, everyone knew Indiana was desperate for a center and they had to pay a lot to get one.

@andrewharp_ I think the first part is fair, and true. I think you're overstating the 2nd part, although obviously I agree they are more limited after this trade than before.

@MillerTimePod And if they don't win a title, they were wrong and overpaid to be wrong. Failure and being wrong is the norm for teams/front offices. They have to be right here, because they've severely limited the ability to be better after the next two years.
