I am genuinely asking (and have no idea the convos actually held): is it cap circumvention for the Bucks to tell Gary Trent Jr: "Hey we don't have any mechanism to pay you a big deal now but if you play here two years we will be able to because we'll have your Early Bird rights."

@TiWindisch Inarguably there needs to be proof for the league to punish anyone for this. It’s fine to say “we are cash strapped, but if you play well we are open to a market deal next time” Wildly illegal to say “if you do us a solid now, we will make you whole regardless of how you play”

I realize why the Kawhi deal is used as a comp for this Trent thing but it’s really not the same at all. The allegation there is the Clippers funneled money to Kawhi via a fake endorsement. Substantially different than giving a player a big raise when allowed to via early bird

@TiWindisch I think it will depend on the conversations that were had. The NBA has to nip this at some point after the Kwahi deal. It will definitely open a can of worms because this clearly is not the first time this has happened

@MillerTimePod Fair. Assuming Klutch Sports understands the CBA rules, what about saying "here's what we can offer you this year, and we enjoy having you in Milwaukee." You could probably say the same thing but still feels difficult to me to legislate against without legit proof

The Bucks would've gladly given Trent a full MLE deal in 2024 but couldn't due to the tax aprons. He wanted to play there and the Bucks wanted him. They didn't have a full MLE in 2025 either. Now they can sign him without needing one due to early bird.

My Trent thoughts are unchanged. Bad deal, looks shady, but unless there is actual evidence of cap circumvention idk how the league can legislate against a capped out team liking a player and continuing to re-up their contract in accordance with how bird rights work in the CBA.
