@MillieOfferman

A disillusioned Liberal Democrat who might make the switch—if only the Republicans would go back to their (kinda) bad old ways vs. this Trump-infused poison.

@mattyglesias IDK. This part feels pretty right on: It feels like the sort of thing written by a committee of socialist college sophomores cracking each other up.

Graham Platner's got the grit to fight for what’s right on behalf of Maine’s working families—not billionaires and giant corporations. He’s inspired a grassroots movement to flip Maine, and I’m thrilled to endorse @grahamformaine for Senate.
Graham Platner for Senate@grahamformaine

🚨Endorsement Alert! 🚨 “People are excited to vote for someone who will actually fight for them. Not just nibble around the edges.” Thank you, Senator Warren. Together I look forward to taking on Wall Street and the billionaires waging a class war against the rest of us.

Good thread on how many people, including liberal women, kept silent on trans issues because they feared being called out by their community, but they'd rant privately to Megan. I hear this too. I know an uber-liberal woman who is a hardcore TERF, but only privately to me.
Megan McArdle@asymmetricinfo

I think Dave Roberts did not hear those rants, because people were extremely afraid to expose verboten views to someone who would deem them transphobic. So when the vibe shifted, it seemed astroturfed rather than authentic. But it was not only extremely authentic; it was the majority view I encountered.

The Afroman Trial. -Cops raid Afromans house for bullshit reasons. -Steal money, break his door, fuck his house up. -No criminality found whatsoever, no charges at all pressed on Afroman. -Afroman spends the next 3 years making songs that make fun of all the officers involved by name, even using footage of the raid from his own CCTV cameras. -Songs had titles like "Randy Walters is a son of a bitch" and "Lick Em Low Lisa" accusing one of the officers of being a lesbian and sleeping with the other officers wives. -During the raid one officer looked like he was about to eat some lemon pound cake sitting on Afromans counter, Afroman made a whole album calling the officer fat. -The cops get mad and file a lawsuit for defamation. -Afroman turns up to court in a whole American flag suit. -Officers performatively mald and cry while listening to the songs really trying to oversell how badly the songs upset them. -One officer was suing because Afroman made a whole song about him saying he was fucking the officers wife. When the officer was asked if Afroman was really fucking his wife, he said "I don't know". Nuking his own case and establishing that there is a non-zero chance that Afroman might actually be fucking his wife. -As his only witness for the trial, Afroman brought a deputies EX FUCKING WIFE. -The jury ruled completely in favour of Afroman. This entire thing has been a great win for free speech and absolutely fucking hilarious.

Transphobes cannot comprehend the concept of self-identification because they don’t know who they are beyond the labels society forced onto them by observing their primary sex characteristics.

It's not about language. It's about the slow erosion of truth. Yes, language evolves. But when the language changes to mean the opposite of what it is-up, down, open, shut-it becomes Orwellian. I also don't think literally can mean NOT literally, FWIW, and I don't case how much people accept it.

I actually don't believe this. Indeed, I don't think the main concerns of EITHER trans activists OR gender crits and right wingers are about language. I think people argue about language because educated people LOVE arguing about language despite it being less important.
Ernie@ProblyNoThanks

@dilanesper The problem is that the entire debate is a battle over language. Pairs of words representing binaries cannot have 'alternative' or ambiguous meanings - just imagine if we had overlapping but partly divergent understandings of the words on/off, odd/even, alive/dead?

@sleepy_devo If that's not the ask, then there should be an admission that "trans women are women" was a very bad misstep and the movement should take it back.

nobody reasonable actually thinks that trans women metamorphose into biological females you fucking retard. the ask is not "believe that men are women", it's "don't be an asshole". you don't have to like trans people. you do have to leave them alone.
CrashN'Burn@BangeSnuskuk

@sleepy_devo @machukorz I'd say it's about as likely as a man ever becoming a woman.

@PolicyMulti @mattyglesias So what. Everything is a constructed right. What's your argument exactly? That property owners should have to float tenants out of their own pocket? Honestly...do you hear yourself? It's neither defensible legally, practically or morally.

@MillieOfferman @mattyglesias Property owners’ rights are neither infinite nor absolute. Try opening up drug rehab facility in your house in a residential street and claiming “but its MY PROPERTY” and you will understand this. Eviction is not some inherent right granted by the universe

Not a Good Jewish Girl✡️@estherzelda0514

The news about Cesar Chavez raping underage girls and Dolores Huerta is bleak, but expected. This phenomenon, the creation of fucktoys of the revolution, is extremely common, and nonpartisan. Wherever you get a movement or group that is insular and hostile towards outsiders, which demands intellectual purity on threat of expulsion, centers itself so thoroughly in the lives of its members that it becomes a social or even familial community in and of itself, and is centered on a charismatic male figure, sexual assault and the exploitation and objectification of women becomes not just a bug, but a feature. You saw it in the young women that leveraged their youthful bodies for Bernie Sanders' primary candidacy, his supporters that accused foes of being "vagina voters," and then the reports that his female staffers had been assaulted and paid less than men. You saw it in the Socialist Workers Party in the UK, when Comrade Delta was accused of rape. The Party's Disputes Committee prioritized party unity, leading to a mass exodus of members. You saw in it FLDS, where Jeffs dominated a town politically and socially, controlling all familial and sexual relations, abolishing private property and owning nearly all land in a trust, and creating a harem of underage girls. You see it in the O9A/764 Networks, where leaders promote revolution and compel members, typically underage or young women and sexual minorities, to commit crimes after extorting them with sexual blackmail material like self-produced child pornography. The truth is, when it comes to political movements and the abuse of women, they can operate so much like cults that they are functionally indistinguishable. The relationship between power and sexual violence is so pervasive and undeniable—it is rare to see a man who strongly desires absolute social or political power that will not soon turn his abusive gaze upon women's bodies and lives.

Dolores Huerta chose to hide and suppress her own pain for the sake of the movement. She had to sit there as her (alleged) rapist was being glorified as a freedom fighter. I cannot imagine.
Ashley Zavala@ZavalaA

New: Dolores Huerta writes lengthy statement following @nytimes investigation into Cesar Chavez. Huerta says she had sexual encounters with Chavez resulting in 2 children. “I have kept a secret because I believed that exposing the truth would hurt the farm worker movement…”

If you own a home with a basement, attic, or backyard, chances are you’ve thought about using it to earn a little extra income or as space for a loved one. We want to make it as easy (and affordable) as possible for you to do that. NYC recently legalized ADUs — but for too many New Yorkers, they’re still tied up in bureaucracy and expense. We're fixing that. Our new toolkit at nyc.gov/aduforyou includes preapproved building plans and a financing calculator so you can get right to building. If we want New York to remain a city for everyone, we have to make it easier for homeowners to stay here. ADU for You will do just that.
