@EpiroteReport One of the problems in Albania is that the ultranationalism is in some ways mainstream. One of the things that keeps them down as the poorest in Europe.

It would have been easier if Britain did not give our lands to our enemies in 1912

@daily_romania @StefanBrakus93 Very divisive topic among the Serbians.
English

@StefanBrakus93 Is Yugoslavia as a Kingdom seen negatively by Serbs like Yugoslavia under Tito?
English

🇷🇸🏴 EXTREMELY hot take, but...Yugoslavia had TWO different versions - monarchist kingdom and communist federal republic - and both ended with inter-ethnic violence and war.
We will ALWAYS put loyalty to the nation above all else
#Serbia #England #Yugoslavia #UK #UnitedKingdom
Callum@AkkadSecretary
In Serbia the Serbs who had fought for the Yugoslav army said Yugoslavia was Serbias biggest mistake. Traveling the nation's of the UK over the last year it's clear the United Kingdom was England's biggest mistake. 🏴🏴🏴 is an admission that we are fundamentally governments based on our ethnic groups and there to defend their interests. Not some vague abstract concept that 🇬🇧 has become.

@LorenaDoberus Greek language has been attested and well documented since 1450 BC.
First ever mention of existence of Albanian language was made in 1284 AD, with the language itself first being attested in 1462 AD.

Ovo je kad neko istoriju nikad nije ucio, vec formirao neki stav na osnovu nacionalizma i najnize propagande.
Nemacka okupaciona zona u delu Srbije uopste nema veze ni sa drzavom, ni sa Srbijom, ni sa Srbima.
Jevreji imaju dugu i bogatu istoriju saradnje i dobrih odnosa sa Srbijom, ukljucujuci mnoge Jevreje u srpskim borbenim formacijama u oba svetska rata, i pozicijama u srpskim drzavama u svim periodima modernog doba.

If you really believe this, then there's no surprise that your education system is among the worst in the world, on top of Turkey being the poorest country in Europe.
Greek language has been continuously in use since the Bronze Age. It was in official use during the ancient Roman times, and was the official language of the empire during Byzantine period.
It survived the hostile Ottoman occupation and suppression and saw restoration of the Greek state. Certain parts of Greece (such as Mani peninsula) actually never fell under the Turks.
Meanwhile, today's Turks still speak a language of Asiatic horde from the Far East, despite being physically looking nothing like actual Turkic peoples.
That's because Turkey is genetic mix of peoples, not Greece.
Today's Greeks still have majority of their genetics from the ancient Greeks and prehistoric Aegean peoples, with a slight Slavic (not Turkic) input.
Meanwhile, today's Turkish people only 5-10% genetic percentage of actual Turkic conquerors and vast majority of Anatolian Greek/Byzantine genes, plus Armenians, Kurds, etc.
Their blood is not of the conquerors, but the conquered. Except that they still speak the language of the conquerors whose genes are today virtually extinct.
English

@BrilliantMaps This is the difference between a real nation and a british project state. Tell albanians, macedonians and gypsies in schools that they’re greek, revive a dead anatolian language unused for 2000 years, and that’s the best puppet state and people you’ll ever manage to create.🇺🇾🤌🏻👏🏻

@TinoZaza_ @HappyPunch To be fair, being "tough" outside of the ring never really helped Benavidez Jr. Especially since he was never world class to begin with.
English

@HappyPunch Jose Benavidez walking up like that and Ryan folding in 10 seconds shows exactly why nobody takes the online tough talk seriously anymore.
English

@Vintage77Ball Team not balanced, lacking defensively especially at midfield, plus too many superstar players up front don't necessarily indicate great teamwork.

@MilosBasileus Okay casillas is replaced, why can it fail?
English

@goodbyekitty12 @amazingmap Because Republic of Ragusa was never a part of Italy nor inhabited by Italians. The map is simply incorrect.
English

@amazingmap Why didn't Italy take back Republic of Ragusa from Yugoslavia's dying hands
English

@amazingmap Republic of Ragusa was definitely not Italian and not a part of Italy.

Top clubs meaning top 6-8 teams from the top leagues each season, which easily includes more than 10 teams from the top leagues over 5 years. That gives a pretty good overview of the league when you compare the performances of those teams against other lower teams in their respective leagues.
That “attempt to measure quality” is as good as any random person listing the top leagues in whatever order they like.
For example, there is zero evidence that teams ranked 8-12th or 17-20th in Italy are so much worse than same rankings in Spain - so much so that the whole Serie A should be pushed behind La Liga.
If anything, there is evidence to the contrary, since Barca and Real are better than the Italian teams, and yet their league is still behind Serie A.
Not to mention other even more incorrect rankings on that list.
English

@MilosBasileus @AnthonyZoric It’s determined by the TOP club performance in European competition. It’s measuring a completely different thing.
This is attempting to measure quality of the league as a whole.
(In any case the uefa coefficient is just telling us what clubs have done best in Europe recently)
English

@BulgarianZoomer @jean1980_80 @daily_romania In reality Bulgaria wanted vast territories based on medieval Bulgarian empire that were otherwise not historically Bulgarian.
As the result, Bulgaria had problems with 100% of its neighbors and always sided with losing powers in world wars.
English

@ZemljaZrak84 @daily_romania And yet nobody could point to a physical difference between Croats and Serbs. Looking exactly the same, with same genetics, calling each other gypsies. 🤷🏻♂️
English

@daily_romania Bulgarians are cool, but Serbs are gypsies and so are you guys, so I get it.
English

@fugazeyfugazi @AnthonyZoric That’s correct - the official UEFA coefficient which determines which league gets which number of clubs in European competitions.
Meanwhile, the first list was completely made up by a nobody and doesn’t represent anything.
English

@MilosBasileus @AnthonyZoric That’s not official rankings of leagues, that’s the coefficients of leagues based on the performance of the best clubs in that league in European competition.
English

@nonregemesse Split, Croatia. 🇭🇷 Just came back from there. 👌
English

Yes, it was definitely a later change.
Original reference by Homer (8th century BC) puts Aethiopia in both far east and far west edges of the world, but definitely not Africa.
Hesiod (8th/7th century) also references king Memnon to the far east, being a son of Eos (dawn) and Tithonus (Trojan prince - also to the east of Greece).
Hecataeus of Miletus (late 6th century BC) places Aethiopia in the lands east of Nile - Red Sea extending to Indian Ocean.
Scylax of Caryanda (515 BC), who traveled to India, again places Aethiopia to the east, from Red Sea to Indian Ocean.
It was only with Herodotus (5th century) that he distinguishes two different Aethiopians: the "woolly-haired" Aethiopians to the south of Egypt, while still locating "straight-haired" Aethiopians to the east.
So, mythical Aethiopia is definitely located in the far east. And both Memnon and Andromeda (first mentioned by Hesiod) are originally connected to the far east, not Africa.
Also "burnt face" doesn't guarantee Africa at all, since people to the far east of Greece towards India would've been "darker" than the Greeks.
So technically all mythical Aethiopians (Memnon, Andromeda, etc) would've been originally located to the far east of Greece towards regions of India because they are both directly and indirectly mentioned to be located there - thus corresponding to "straight-haired" Aethiopians of the east (Herodotus), and not Africa.
You growing up thinking that Greeks and Egyptians looked Germanic because of the movies is not an argument to invoke some kind of revenge against Greeks by portraying them "differently" (in reality meaning completely desecrating them).
That quote about Cleopatra from Jada Pinkett Smith's movie trailer sums up everything perfectly.
Somehow, it's always those who don't particularly like or care about ancient Greece that are always happy to see and first to defend/relativize African Helen, Achilles, Zeus, Cleopatra, etc etc.
English

@MilosBasileus @evan1ae @RealHellenist Aethiopia being in africa wasn't a later change. The term "Aethiopians" (derived from the Greek Aithiops) translates to "burnt face".
Seeing those characters as black actors is different. But I also grew up thinking Greeks looked like Kevin Sorbo Egyptians like Charlton Heston
English

It is normal to some acceptable degree.
However, in some cases there is no justification:
Achilles - not normal, not acceptable
Zeus - not normal, not acceptable
Helen of Troy - not normal, not acceptable
Cleopatra (plus the quote "I don't care what they tell you in school, Cleopatra was Black") - not normal, not acceptable
Any time this happens, there is justified outrage and the movie/show fails.
I had high hopes for the Odyssey, but I've already noticed Agamemnon's completely unrealistic armor/helmet looking like Batman, and if they really destroy Helen of Troy, the movie will certainly not raise to the expectations.
English

@MilosBasileus @evan1ae @RealHellenist Sophocles and Euripides both set the myth of Andromeda in Aethiopia.
Changing Greek heroes to modern times is normal. When you look at all the germanic, celtic looking actors that play them. You never see someone of Mediterranean decent. It's because we are english speakers.
English

Sure. Just like the location of Aethiopia being in Africa was also a later change.
Your point that Andromeda "should be black" does not really stand, because she was not stated to be such.
However, I did concede that I wouldn't have anything against her or Memnon being depicted as such in a movie. Even Zendaya as Athena tbh.
But you have to agree that Helen of Troy, Achilles and Zeus are completely ridiculous and unacceptable.
That was 100% done on purpose.
English

@MilosBasileus @evan1ae @RealHellenist My point exactly, using pottery wasn't the best way to determine skin color.
The entire story is Mythology, so Aethiopia being a mythical land fits. But Andromeda being Phoenician was a later change in the Roman era. Roman geographer Pomponius Mela, Strabo and Josephus.
English

Perseus is pained black because the artistic style used is the "Black-figure" pottery style. There were 2 main pottery styles: black figure and red figure.
Here is the exact same scene with Heracles in both styles.
This doesn't mean that Perseus, Heracles or any other person in Greek mythology was "Black African".
Aethiopia specifically was a mythical land, originally not tied to Nubia or Africa. Nor were Andromeda, Memnon or anyone else originally stated to be African or black. Andromeda specifically is described as having divine or Phoenician lineage, which is definitely not close to the African actors on the above pic.
I personally wouldn't mind if they had African actors for Andromeda, Memnon, etc.
But when it comes Helen, Achilles, Zeus, Cleopatra, etc - what they are doing is desecration and unacceptable disrespect to Greek history and mythology.

English

@MilosBasileus @evan1ae @RealHellenist The art you added is a Roman fresco from Pompei not from Classical Greek. Using pottery for skin color isn't the best. Why is Perseus black in this? Perseus defends Andromeda . Corinthian black-figure amphora from Cerveteri (Italy), 575-550 BCE.
