Minnehaha Creek WD

Thank you @NWS and @WRNAmbassadors for naming us a 2022 Ambassador of Excellence! Partnerships with @NWSTwinCities, @NWSncrfc, @USGS, and @Hennepin play a vital role in improving @graysbaydam operations to predict, manage, and communicate water levels in a changing climate.

The MCWD office is closed today for Labor Day. We will be open regular hours again starting tomorrow.

Lake Nokomis has dropped 6 inches since @MplsParkBoard opened the weir on Wed 8/21. The weir will remain open through Sun 8/25 and will close prior to predicted rain on Mon 8/26. 2019 is now the 2nd wettest year to date after recent rains.

@widespot Yes, stormwater runoff is responsible for the spike in creek flow as Gray’s Bay Dam has been discharging between 50-75 cubic feet per second since August 2. We just sent out a water level update where you can find more details: bit.ly/31PTuA7.

@widespot The 1.74 inches of rain that fell caused the creek to almost quadruple in flow in Minneapolis going from approximately 130 cubic feet per second (cfs) to 507 cfs. The creek has steadily decreased since the rain stopped.

The sample she found is being pressed by an aquatic plant expert and preserved at the University of Wisconsin - Steven's Point and the New York Botanical Garden!

Jill, our Research & Monitoring Technician, found native Bearded Stonewort in Holy Name Lake in Medina during a plant survey. The plant has only been found in 16 lakes in MN and WI, which is more than is known to exist anywhere else in the world combined!

@jdburtonMN @NokomisWater It was closed due to rain predicted overnight to prevent the creek from entering the lake. Over 1.2-in. of rain fell in the Nokomis area & caused the creek to peak around 320 cfs.
