I was grateful to join the Rev. Al Sharpton, and my dear colleague Bishop Mariann Budde, last night to talk about how Minnesota is responding to ICE’s reckless cruelty by mobilizing for love.

Last night on #PoliticsNation, I was joined by Bishop Mariann Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington and Bishop Craig Loya of the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota to reflect on the moral and spiritual crisis unfolding in Minnesota. We discussed the killing of 37 year old Alex Pretti, a VA nurse and man of faith, who was shot and killed by ICE federal agents, and the disturbing effort by the administration to mischaracterize his life despite video evidence and the testimony of his family. Both Bishops spoke about how faith communities in Minnesota are responding not with fear, but with love, care, and moral courage. From protecting schools and day cares to supporting families and neighbors, they reminded us that cruelty does not have the final word. At a moment when people are being told not to believe what they see with their own eyes, faith leaders are once again stepping forward to speak truth, defend dignity, and lift up hope.

Today I learned that Mahlon Gilbert, Assistant Bishop of Minnesota from 1886-1900, was a serious angler, wrote for Field and Stream magazine, and once caught three trout on two flies at the same time. So. . .new dreams.

Here’s another thing I really love about the Diocese of Minnesota: when I returned from vacation to attend a diocesan event today, the first thing several clergy asked me was how the fishing was.

After Iraq I was so angry. I went to an episcopal church because a friend from Iraq invited me. When I took communion, I felt God’s love even though I couldn’t feel it anywhere else. I’ll never stop being grateful for this night when Jesus gave us himself.
