I’m sick & tired of seeing people walking their dogs in the intense or leaving them in cars. Temperature will exceed 30 degrees by Monday & dogs will suffer & die because of ignorance & stupidity. Please look after them enduring this heatwave it can be a killer for our precious companions

When Kim, our founder, arrived at the charity shop on Saturday, she found a parcel waiting for her. Inside was a beautiful album dedicated to a dog called Kalu, who had recently passed away. Tucked inside was a poignant note describing just how much this former Sri Lankan street dog had meant to one family. This is the story behind that album, and a love affair that lasted many years. Back in 2013, we rescued a young dog who had been badly beaten and was unable to stand. We named him Inness. He was a handsome boy, and thankfully, with care and patience, he slowly recovered. A member of staff even found him a home, but Inness never forgot the abuse he had suffered. We suspected much of it had come from a woman, because whenever a local woman approached him, he reacted with fear, cowering, terrified, and sometimes aggressive. The manager at the time fell deeply in love with him. After returning home to Scotland, she could not stop thinking about him and eventually made the decision to adopt him herself. For more than a decade, Inness, renamed Kalu, became a treasured member of the family. He was there through the growth of the family, deeply loved every single day. He enjoyed long walks, cosy evenings by the fire, and more affection than many street dogs could ever dream of. Although that love story sadly ended with his recent passing, the album now holds the memories of his remarkable life, and of the extraordinary good fortune he had to be given a chance that so few street dogs ever receive. Yesterday, we introduced you to our newest addition, Bumpy the orphaned hippo. This was his flight down to Kaluku. He was a perfect passenger – he scrambled right into Keeper Joseph's lap and spent most of the trip chattering in little hippo grunts! Bumpy is very new to the fold – he was rescued over the weekend. His mother appears to have died in a territorial fight, likely defending her baby's life. Now, Bumpy has a family with us and a wild future ahead. Lovely weather, isn't it?🌞 Unless you're a nocturnal animal who has to sleep all through the hot day, and wake at night to find no water. No puddles. No kind dishes. Unseen. Unthought of. Just the tantalising smell of water from a pond you may drown in, or a drain you may get trapped in, or a stagnant, dirty old birdbath you may get fatal fluke from. Hedgehogs need to drink a lot of water to stay healthy. Please provide clean, fresh, safe ground level water for our precious wildlife. Tap water is best. Pop a dish or two out tonight. Keep it clean. Keep it full. Keep it saving lives.❤️

Ah, dandelions. 🌼 If only they were rare, fragile, and hard to cultivate. Then we'd treasure them. But because they are hardy and successful and forgiving and adaptable, we disparage them. Consider them unworthy of our respect. Even though they are the perfect plant - providing green all year round and cheerful flowers in the spring, are edible and highly nutritious, containing vitamins A, C, and K, along with minerals like calcium and iron, and are our precious pollinator's lifeline. Please find a little love for these hard working flowers and leave them undisturbed, this month at least.

40 Members of the European Parliament from 15 countries are calling for the phased elimination of force-feeding in foie gras production across the EU. This should be a turning point. But instead, what we’re seeing - both in the EU and the UK - is political backtracking under industry pressure. Our investigation revealed that European Commissioners met multiple times with foie gras industry representatives in 2025. Shortly after, the Commission moved forward with rules that continue to accommodate force-feeding - protecting the very system MEPs are now challenging. At the same time in the UK, the Government is on the verge of quietly abandoning its clear promise to ban foie gras imports. No public debate or mandate. Just reports of the pledge being traded away in EU-UK negotiations. Across Europe, decision-makers are listening to industry voices while ignoring public demand and political commitments to end one of the most extreme forms of animal suffering. Foie gras production is so cruel it’s been banned in the UK for nearly 20 years. Yet imports continue - and now even that modest step forward is at risk. Governments cannot claim progress on animal protection while simultaneously enabling the very systems they say they oppose. Stay informed and join us in future actions. Out in the day = I’m NOT ok! 🚨🦔 Hedgehogs are nocturnal, so daytime activity is a red flag. Taleggio was found out in daylight — emaciated and heavily burdened with parasites. Despite seeming bright, he’s very unwell.
