As you said players want to play not be scratched and ‘saved’.

It's why you have management that thinks long-term.
Is it better for him to play through it in meaningless games to end the season, or rest it, get treatment, and be ready for the start of next season.

Asked Matthew Knies if there was any thought to shutting him down for the season as he deals with a lingering knee injury. "It's kind of an injury that I don't think it could get much worse. So I don't think that there's any risk for me playing. It's obviously not comfortable playing through it, but everyone's playing through something, I feel like, at this time of year. So that's not really an excuse. But, if it's not going to get worse, then there's no problem with me playing, then I'm going to play."

@DwayneNHL Again I have never seen the Nylander or Caufield comparisons. Feel free to post ALL those comparisons. For the record, today based on their term and AAV I would not trade Suzuki for Marner. Nick for $7.875m for 7 more years is better for a roster than Marner 2 yrs at $10.9m.

The key was to try to find someone better (leadership) with more bite and more personality to take over that dressing room.
Problem is they (Org) empowered Matthews with captaincy.

@MinorMidgetGTHL @Petespucks @DwayneNHL I'm not 100% sure but im pretty sure hes finished top 10 in takeaway and blocked shots amongst forwards too in all those years. AM is a fantastic 2 way C and finishing top 15 yearly while scoring at his rate is pretty crazy. I do think Berube hockey has muzzled him though.

Matthews is a great player. Elite regular season goal scorer, very good defensively (not elite) but has many holes in his overall game.

Federov certainly did, and was missed by ai, but he may actually be the only person to ever do that as a centre: score 50+ and win a Selke.
Matthews scoring 69 and being a finalist in the modern, cap era is certainly generational.

Federov was a centre that scored 56 goals in a season and won the Hart, Pearson (Lindsay) and Selke that yr.
