🚨🇲🇲Foreign mercenaries in Myanmar — what we know so far Seven foreign nationals (six Ukrainians, one American) have been arrested in India in an anti-terror probe linked to militant activity in Myanmar. ▪️Mizoram officials flagged a spike in “unusual” Western visitors in 2024 despite little visible tourism. ▪️Intelligence suggests some Western mercenaries involved in Ukraine conflict may have crossed into Myanmar via the border, as reported by the state’s Chief Minister in 2025, to train rebel groups. ▪️One of the Western support networks that aids anti-government factions is Free Burma Rangers, led by a former US Special Forces member. ▪️Media reports (including Al Jazeera) have also documented individual Western veterans joining or advising rebel units. ▪️Rebel groups themselves have publicly claimed foreign mercenaries are on the ground, some embedded with local militias like the armed wing of opposition— People’s Defence Force (PDF). ▪️A newer group called the Anti-Fascist Internationalist Front (AIF) (2024) is made up of foreign fighters who arrived to openly fight and train rebels, particularly in Chin State, according to its member. ▪️AIF members claim prior combat experience in other conflicts (like Syria), and have released combat footage and drone strike videos from Myanmar. ▪️Another secessionist group called the People's Defence Force Zoland (PDF Zoland), confirmed on social media that it was hosting foreign fighters from the US and the UK.
