markdown + llms.txt mogs html & we have a benchmark that proves it in september last year, we added support for content negotiation. which means we serve agents markdown instead of html the initial rollout wasn't great, right after we shipped, @pk_iv noticed it led to claude code 404 hallucinating links for browserbase's docs we shipped a fix by adding a llms.txt link at the top of the markdown, but were always suspicious it might not be optimal now we know it actually is! agents want markdown

Everything is reproducible: raw results ship in the repo, every table and p-value regenerates without API keys, and every 404 classification is checked against each site's real page inventory. Or point it at your own docs and watch live. github.com/mintlify/docs-…

The conclusion is: → serve markdown via content negotiation → publish llms.txt and link it from your pages That gets the full 404 reduction at a fraction of the token cost of inlining the index everywhere.

We made Claude Code and Codex surf docs and counted every 404 they hit before finding the answer. We served the same content 4 ways: raw HTML, plain markdown, markdown + an llms.txt index, and markdown with the llms.txt inlined on every page. We found that agents reach for markdown and llms.txt on their own, and HTML-only finished last by a wide margin (15-30x more 404s than markdown + llms.txt).
