I've been in this space since 2017, and I've seen dozens of exploits happen over the years.
The main lesson I learned after every exploit is that you truly understand the quality of the team behind the project in the next 2/3 days afterward.
And the work that Kelp's team has done is truly one of the most reactive & professional I've seen in this space.
The initial hole in Kelp was 163,200 ETH. Keep this number in mind.
Kelp managed to recover 43,000 ETH directly. Arbitrum Security Council froze another 30,700 ETH.
EtherFi, Ethena, Lido, Mantle, and Golem committed 43,500 ETH in confirmed public posts.
They recovered 72% of the total stolen funds, that's 117,200 ETH for a second. The hole suddenly dropped from 163,200 ETH to 46,000 ETH. Assuming the rest will be covered by Kelp's Treasury once we have a final number.
I remember reading posts right after the exploit that this was the final nail in the coffin for DeFi.
Good to see Kelp and Aave bringing the entire ecosystem together with the mission of making DeFi United and keeping moving forward.
The big guys are always louder and well-resourced to own their narrative, but Kelp has stayed silent and been working relentlessly behind the scenes. I am rooting for them.

Kelp and @aave have been working closely with ecosystem partners since April 18 to coordinate a recovery effort for rsETH holders. We want to share some factual statements about where we are, progress made, and the next steps. @ether_fi @ethena @LidoFinance @golemproject @inkfndhq @tydrohq @Mantle_Official @fraxfinance and layerzero have each committed in best capacity. We greatly appreciate their contributions. More announcements to follow. The initial shortfall from the incident was 163,200 ETH. Kelp recovered 40,300 rsETH (~43,000 ETH), while the @arbitrum Security Council secured another 30,700 ETH. Following these recoveries, the remaining shortfall stands at approximately 89,500 ETH. Of that remaining gap, confirmed public commitments from Mantle, Stani, EtherFi, Lido, Golem total 43,500 ETH. Kelp has been in direct conversations with partners in this effort to formalize the contributions. rsETH holders come first, and that’s been our priority since day 1. Been thinking about this lately Everyone says "learn new skills" Which I agree with But nobody really mentions that learning how to monetize those skills is just as important A lot of people are sitting on skills they could get paid for and have no idea how to go about it

After Aave got bad debt --> normal users rushed to withdraw ETH/stables --> pools slammed to 100% utilization = no one can get out.
Stuck depositors realized they couldn’t withdraw but could still borrow --> they maxed their credit, yanking out as much stables as possible via loans.
Lenders turned into leveraged borrowers on a pool that already had a hole --> risk spirals higher.
Whales/normies/treasuries pulled almost $8B from Aave and derisked on other similar protocols (Morpho, Sky, Fluid, Kamino, etc.) --> bridge/LST collateral is now “radioactive” in the eyes of serious money. Heck, many people won't even deposit USDC/USDT alone. Simply because it's not worth it for 3% APY, since you might lose 100% of your capital.
DeFi works as intended, but at what cost? Will be interesting to see what comes out of this.
