@Edu_emerging Keep going. I was in the same place as you during my PGCE when we hit October half term, I was so close to throwing the towel in because my mentor told me the skills I possessed weren’t useful as an art teacher (photographer, social media/marketing and graphic design) 1/2

I’m taking on my first role as a mentor next week. I want to put together a little welcome gift/survival kit for my trainee that will make them feel welcome but also help them get through this first term. What should I include in there? What would you have appreciated? @MrTs_NQTs

@LeeBraganza I had a class of 37 last year and just prayed each week that a couple were off ill or suspended because my classroom only had 30 seats and I went straight from the lesson before into teaching that group so never had time to collect chairs beforehand as they were needed elsewhere.

I've gone from a class of 19 to 32 and it feels like an impossible job at times. I'm flapping against the wind. Class sizes should be no more than 20 and I'll fight anyone who thinks differently.

@laura_shoe_lady @Ameenamahetar1 @MrTs_NQTs We currently don’t have any SoW in place at all so don’t have any building blocks to work from. I’m happy to contribute but to be responsible for an entire subject when I’m not head of department or actually have any specialist knowledge in the area seems off to me.

@Ameenamahetar1 @MissC_Ar @MrTs_NQTs Yes exactly…that’s why i’m thinking are other staff also being asked to do them…eg are they working in pairs to do this, or are they taking a few each to do etc..

My head of faculty has instructed me to write all the schemes of work for KS3 in a subject that I’m not a specialist in (and know very little about). Are they allowed to do this? Should I not be getting a TLR for a responsibility like this?@MrTs_NQTs

@RunSirRun @MrTs_NQTs If the teaching model in your school and the one you apply for yourself allows chances for live marking, implement this. Going round and marking work during the independent practice part of my lesson, even if it’s just 5 or 10 students, really takes the burden off home marking.

Had a really good lesson observation this afternoon with lots of positive feedback. Came at just right the right time, just as I was starting to feel useless and considering leaving. I think sometimes we get too critical of our own practice and can’t see the good we do every day

@thatMissJones @MrTs_NQTs I have to teach DT because the department is short staffed and I had a disastrous yr 8 food tech lesson the other day. Students were allowed to pick their own recipe. Would love to say this was the first fight I’d broken up this week but the snow has sent the kids wild this week and snowball/ice fights were taken too far and resulted in some short tempers that ripples through the years.

A career first today. Finally became the casualty in a fight whilst trying to break it up. I’ve broken up fights from year 7, through to sixth formers fine before and the kids usually avoid punching teachers, but today a year 9 bested me and I have a lovely bump on the forehead.

@MissHanHistory As someone who moonlights as a nail tech in the evenings and weekends, I’d be fuming if my school asked staff to have no nail polish, keep my nails short, take my facial piercings out and have a natural hair colour. I think kids should be allowed to see a teacher’s individuality.

@MissHanHistory It’s a health and safety risk due to the activities children get up to on a daily basis. An English teacher does very different activities to a PE teacher. It should be what is appropriate for what activities you do. Kids take part in all activities so it’s a no for them

@abbeykpsych @MrTs_NQTs My first school required that I covered up at all times. I’m completely covered, arms, legs, shoulders, back. My school now loves that I’m tattooed and encourages me to have them on display. I think it works in my favour that I teach art as they become a talking point in lesson.

What is your school/college’s policy on tattoos? I got 1/4 sleeve on Saturday and some people I know and family have suggested it may impact my employability. Thanks for any help! @MrTs_NQTs

@MissSandersSays @MrTs_NQTs @TTRadio2022 @TeacherToolkit I try not to work at all during the first 2 HTs and Christmas holidays, only because I know GCSE and a level crunch time means the other holidays are taken up by marking and intervention sessions. I’m lucky that in my department most of the lessons are pre-planned and ready to go

It’s 4pm the Sunday before going back to school after HT. I am only just starting to do work and can barely face it. Does anyone actually just take their holidays as a teacher and not work? Feeling really down and unmotivated 😞 @TTRadio2022 @MrTs_NQTs @TeacherToolkit

@MrTs_NQTs Thank you. I’d assumed it had already been added on, but looking closer at my payslip I realised my TLR for head of house was higher than I thought it was going to be.

@MissC_Ar You are correct, however pay increases happen after the cycle of performance management ends in a school. You should go up after October and you will have it backdated to September.

I’m in my 2nd year of ECT, I started working at my current school from 1st July after passing my PGCE. Having checked my pay, I’m still on M1… I was under the impressions that ECTs should move up in their second year to M2 given they achieved targets. Am I wrong? @MrTs_NQTs

@thosethatcan See if your local police force has a VRU (violence reduction unit). Ours does and they were able to deliver trauma informed CPD to our school. It was really interesting and super helpful.

I’d like to become more trauma informed in my teaching because the extensive and robust research I have seen demonstrates that this leads to positive outcomes for young people and society so please send me your best leads for further reading and experts in this area. Thanks!

Does anyone have any recommendations of picture books that challenge gender stereotypes (particularly boys liking pink, “girly” things) that are suitable for year 1 in a church school? @MrTs_NQTs

@GayleRaybould @MrTs_NQTs That is already an issue for me as I live in the town I work in right now. I’d love to go back home and work at my old school but it does require moving halfway across the country yet again. It’s my only reserve I have about this after seeing everyone’s positive replies.
