I played an FM in the last round of my norm tournament in Charlotte. I lost. Here I played Nc2+. This is bad after Kd2 Nxa1 Qf6 and I am forced to trade queens, because if Qxb2+ Ke3 Nc2+ Kf4 he escapes the checks and I'm getting mated. Instead I should have played Bg4.

Blübaum on the “Great Blubaum Sweep” 🇩🇪 Ahead of Candidates 2026, Matthias Blübaum was asked about the viral #GreatBlubaumSweep trend: “I have no idea who started it or where it came from. Apparently people are posting fake comments saying I’ll score 14/14. I take it with humor, it’s quite funny, but I have nothing to do with it. It’s obviously a bit absurd.”

Now that @humpy_koneru decided to withdraw from the @FIDE_chess Candidates and @annamuzychuk90 is the new candidate, we are hopeful that we have the final list of players. Is there any other player you thought should have qualified for the candidates this year?

🇷🇺 Esipenko on 🇮🇳 Gukesh: “His level really depends on his form” Ahead of a potential clash, Andrey Esipenko shared a nuanced view on World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju. He described Gukesh as a hard player to evaluate, saying his level fluctuates with form. At his best, he’s an extremely strong and complete player, but there are also noticeable dips. Esipenko highlighted Gukesh’s biggest strength as his middlegame calculation — often finding precise ideas and outcalculating opponents even from worse positions. At the same time, he noted Gukesh relies more on deep calculation and resourcefulness than flashy intuition. Looking at his results in 2025 and early 2026, Esipenko added that this phase hasn’t been particularly impressive despite the world title. ♟️ Overall: elite talent, but consistency remains the key question.
