🧠 Effective teaching depends on understanding how learning happens. Daniel Willingham’s Simple Model of the Mind provides a practical lens for designing instruction grounded in key insights from cognitive science. It helps teachers move beyond poor proxies for learning and make more deliberate decisions about what students attend to, think about, and remember. The full What, Why, and How—plus a free planning resource—are available in this week’s ⚗️DistillED. newsletter.jamieleeclark.com/p/the-simple-m…

This, from @dylanwiliam's recent blog post, is the centre of my presentation next week — The Professional Mind — at #rEEdinburgh. Do come along and see me slide-less; they really aren't essential.

What does great teaching look like? The Model for Great Teaching is an excellent summary of the Great Teaching Toolkit Evidence Review (Coe et al, 2020). 1 Understanding the content. 2. Creating a supportive environment. 3. Maximising opportunity to learn. 4. Activating hard thinking. @EvidenceInEdu evidencebased.education

We’ve been getting granular about modelling in Teaching and Practice Labs recently. This simple exercise gave teachers the chance to think about checking for understanding as they model - what are the ‘do not pass go’ moments that need checking before handing over to students? 🤓

High standards schools are going all in on techniques like Turn and Talk, SLANT, STAR, SHAPE and choral response, and I think we need to remember that "engagement is not a proxy for learning" doesn't just apply to posters, group work, wandering the room or whatever. Just because they are in SLANT or STAR doesn't mean they're listening Just because they snap to a pacy Turn and Talk doesn't mean the conversation starter was worth it Just because they've SHAPEd their answer into a nice full sentence doesn't mean they understand more than if they'd said it as one word Just because you get a belting response when you do a Call and Response doesn't mean all students are doing it, or understand what they are saying
Adam Boxer@adamboxer1

Turn and Talk is very popular right now, I see it in most lessons I go to. HOWEVER, in 95% of cases I watch it and think "that lesson would have been better without it to be honest" Why? 👇

I have turned all our Macbeth lessons into a booklet - I just like having them for off-site pupils, anyone out of lesson etc. Sharing in case you are a booklety sort of school! It is literally just our powerpoints copied and pasted into booklet form :) drive.google.com/drive/folders/…

Disciplinary literacy - The way that a historian reads, writes and thinks is different to how scientist operates. Each subject context has different needs and requirements. It's useful to point this out and have students (and sometimes teachers!) reflect on this.
