The Model for Great Teaching offers a curriculum for teachers’ professional learning. It provides a common professional language and a shared structure for enabling Great Teaching. "Having words for important concepts enables community members to talk about them, think together and agree on their meaning, interrogate them for deeper understanding and gain collective clarity around related action and impact." Language for learning leadership Stoll (2020) Which Element will you focus on first? Let us know in the comments below! 👇

"From my own classroom experience, I have seen how regular retrieval opportunities can boost students' confidence. When learners can recall curriculum content quickly and accurately, they begin to approach tests and exams with greater assurance. This confidence is not coincidental. It is the result of repeated, low-stakes retrieval practice opportunities. To maximise both academic and pastoral benefits, teachers may want to consider the following..." "As the exam season approaches, older students will likely be receiving (or searching for) helpful revision advice. Responsive Revision offers a different approach. This is a term I have been sharing with teachers, students and parents (inspired by the concept of responsive teaching and acting on evidence to inform next steps)." Imagine connecting with educators that are on the same journey as you! We’re proud to announce the launch of Great Teaching Centres, giving you the opportunity to connect with schools who are using the GTT to create a culture of professional learning in ways that work in real contexts. Hear directly what implementation looks like day-to-day, learn what’s worked (and what they’d do differently), and explore practical ideas you can adapt in your own context. Want to speak to a Centre? Message us and we’ll make an introduction. Find out more about them here 👇 evidencebased.education/resource/great…

Do you use video as a professional learning tool? "Videos of classroom practice offer a few practical advantages as a professional learning tool. Namely, it’s easy to pause, rewind, and revisit as many times as you’d like! Say you’re watching videos of classroom practice to see some more examples of cold calling. Maybe you thought you noticed the teacher make a particular gesture or signal as they ask a question. Rewind a take a closer look! Then go back again, paying particular attention to how the students react. Through video, it becomes so much easier to consider much more than we would with a live, in-person observation." When tests hit the ceiling: Why ‘ceiling effects’ matter An assessment's 'ceiling effect' may have immediate implications for a classroom teacher, but it's also a concern of educational researchers. In this blog, @ProfCoe explores the concept through the lens of a real research project using schools' internal assessments. Such educational research carried out by us, our partners, and other researchers shapes professional learning—and ultimately can lead to improved pupil attainment and equity. "Peer assessment involves students giving feedback to one another. This may be verbal, written as comments or codes, or by checking and scoring. Feedback can be shared individually, in pairs or in groups. While peer assessment can be valuable, it is not without challenges. Teachers need to be mindful of the variables that influence its effectiveness. Since students are novices at giving feedback, they will need explicit modelling and ongoing guidance."
