Always fun to play @MickelsonNGC - especially ahead of @pgaofcanada Championship this week & then MN Invitational early July.
Nice round @WesGilbertson & to share the day with a couple of proper players @MitchFox87 & @scottstilesgolf
Course is in great condition, greens are 🔥

@scottstilesgolf That stat probably looks pretty familiar to you also!

The psychology of the golf ball rollback outrage
"Golf is already hard enough as it is. Now it's going to get even harder."
"I'm only going to get worse when they make me hit it shorter."
The problem with the outrage about the rollback isn't about the validity of changing the rule
It's not about whether it will actually make a difference
It's not about whether it will slow down progress in the game
👉 The problem with the outrage is letting external factors decide for you how you see golf and your own improvement at the game
There are endless uncontrollable factors in golf that make golf difficult
- The golf ball and equipment are already held back from making golf easier (see the link in the tweet below 👇)
- Course conditions already make golf random and unpredictable
- Weather already has a massive effect on what you shoot today
So if adding another uncontrollable factor onto the list shakes your confidence in your own game and causes you to question how working hard at it will even make you better "if they're just going to change the game to make it tougher again"
Then you need to have a hard look at your own mindset
This is what's called a Fixed Mindset. Believing that no matter what I do I can't ultimately control my own improvement
The opposite is a Growth Mindset- believing I have the ability and final say about my own improvement
Letting something or someone else slow you down is on you.

@PackAttackGD @LouStagner No it’s like changing the basketball because they kept changing the ball to make it easier and easier to make a shot. Golf is not changing the size of hole, that would be similar to this.
English

@LouStagner It’s like making the basketball hoops 11’ just because the pros are shooting too high of a percentage. Just leave the game alone. Worry more about the riff that LIV has caused.
English

@AndrewRiceGolf Im surprised anybody in Canada even plays golf with how short we are forced to hit it due to temperature. It’s not fair!
English

As you start to mentally prepare for the rollback 6 years from now, consider what effect the temperature might have on the distance the golf ball travels!🤓

@practicalgolf @MikeStachura Some people will for sure say that. I don’t think the majority will notice though. Some people will also complain ball goes too far. Us golfers like to complain regardless, it’s usually about no beer cart and punched greens though.
English

You're not wrong, but a couple of things...
1) Finding a really good clubfitter is hard geographically for a lot of golfers
2) Some people might say, "Wait a second, now I need to spend thousands of dollars just to keep up with where I'm at now??!! You (golf industry) all told me to keep buying new stuff for years to get distance already."
(Not blaming you personally,I just have come to know golfers)
English

A thought:
Percentage of average recreational golfers who are fully optimized with their equipment, swing and fitness: Very, very, very few.
Potential for them to improve in those areas and not ever notice the effect of any rollback: Very, very, very high.

@MichaelBreed @USGA @RandA It is fine for a bat and ball sport to evolve but we became the F1 of bat and ball sports, most of that since the mid 90’s. Utility clubs and wedges have been very beneficial for all. But the distance thru equipment got out of control. Giving a bit back is still a nett gain.
English

@BradIngarfield @PeteStone117 @MyGolfSpy @shotscope Exactly! The average golfer doesn’t care about this stuff as much as we want them to. And in 7 years everyone will be longer just from more information so we will be right where we are now. Nothing will change.
English

@MitchFox87 @PeteStone117 @MyGolfSpy @shotscope In 1990, golfers in Australia and the UK were forced to change from the smaller British ball to the larger American ball. It knocked 20 yards of drives. Participation never wavered. Chill out, everyone.
English

Yes, the rollback will affect you.
Even the best golfers in the @shotscope database aren't hitting the ball too far...
It's this type of data that confirms the USGA isn't taking into account players like you and me and those to come.
Growing the game?
Give me a break.

English

@BradIngarfield @PeteStone117 @MyGolfSpy @shotscope We have a system that tracks how long each hole takes. All the slowest holes are the reachable par 5s and par 4s. I don’t think this change will help that, but it won’t make it worse.
English

@MitchFox87 @PeteStone117 @MyGolfSpy @shotscope A lot of courses have beginner tees in the fairways, it won't be too hard to move them 5 yards forward.
English

@PeteStone117 @BradIngarfield @MyGolfSpy @shotscope Biggest complaint is usually no beer cart to be honest ha.
English

@PeteStone117 @BradIngarfield @MyGolfSpy @shotscope Why will it slow play down? So golf has been getting quicker and quicker? Why do I see constant slow play complaints also when we are hitting it further than ever.
English

@PeteStone117 @BradIngarfield @MyGolfSpy @shotscope I promise I don’t need to tee it forward, I will now get to hit more drivers at my local clubs tho.
But I am out on the course I work at helping speed up play and running the tee sheet and listening to public golfers all day and know what slows my course down.
