If you buy that Marty Makary's firing is about vapes, congratulations, you're gullible enough to work for the Wall Street Journal. Everyone intuited that Big Pharma runs FDA. The value of having people with spines there, even briefly, is that we received incontrovertible evidence of that fact.

Delighted to be hearing Mats Lekander speak this evening. His book The Inflamed Feeling gets recommended in recovery circles and it's a gem academic.oup.com/book/38808/cha…

People say "the world is getting worse." The data says the opposite. Longer lives. Less poverty. More literacy. Cheaper energy. Better medicine. The gap between perception and reality has never been wider, but the crisis news media will tell you otherwise!

2 - 2.5 billion dollars set aside to help homeless Los Angelenos is gone. Someone has that $. Don’t demonize people on the street - you won’t know humility until you serve breakfast to a homeless person and he prays over it before he eats. yahoo.com/news/us-attorn…

are others finding claude to be absolutely worthless for epidemiology work? if you so much as ask "what is r0 for andes strain hantavirus and what is the most definitive research" it throws up a block and kicks you down to haiku (which is lobotomized).

These are the ones my novelist husband possesses most strongly: "wit (a tendency to make irreverent connections); obstinacy and a tendency toward churlishness (a refusal to believe what all sensible people know is true)"
Aaron Gwyn@AmericanGwyn

1/ In ON BECOMING A NOVELIST, John Gardner lists the qualities he believes a novelist will possess. He presents it like a diagnostic that screens for fiction writers: “Like other kinds of intelligence, the storyteller's is partly natural, partly trained.

"Real-world data from Europe continue to show that masks were not the decisive lifesaving intervention many believed them to be. Acknowledging this simply honors the evidence—and the importance of keeping scientific debate grounded in data rather than faith or politics."
Tablet Magazine@tabletmag

For years, mask mandates were treated as unquestionable public-health doctrine. But randomized trials, Cochrane reviews, and new analyses of European mortality data told a far murkier story about how effective widespread masking really was. tabletmag.com/sections/scien…

@jdcmedlock I like “many billionaires earn their income and we should tax their earned income at a level higher than the median American, because the biggest winners of American society should participate in the preservation of societal well-being” better than ~all billionaires are thieves~

@larissaphillip @Perez_Writes I’ve always been able to tune out my surroundings and focus on reading. If anything, the ambient stimulation of energy and noise makes my brain activate and focus and make connections in a more potent way. I’ve never thought of it as strange but maybe it is. 😅

@MoMoPerry @Perez_Writes Really?? I don’t get it. It seems very picturesque but after one drink you’re losing your focus, and if the bar is busy it’s distracting… ??

My heart breaks for the good men who’ve been reading in public for years. The sweet guys who never wanted any part of this male reading culture war but are now on the frontline. They’re at risk of being labeled “performative” and lumped in with the bad men who read. I hope they don’t get radicalized.
