@EPM106 It’s the essence of TV. You have two compelling characters played by dynamic actors? Put them in a room!

@Smug_Homeslice All parts of a story are equally integral imo. Themes without plots are literally just a list of interesting ideas! It is extremely, absurdly easy to make a list of 'cool shit to talk about'. Making that a story, a plot, that actually conveys things--that's the hard part.

I think “themes and such” is moreso critiquing how a stories conclusion fails to actually address its claimed themes in a satisfying (or at least whole) manner. Themes are the most integral part of a story imo, but if what’s built around it fails to fully engage with them, then
the emiliest! 🌻@emilyis_emilies

“themes and such” being like an insult is weird to me because… i feel like. delivering your themes and message properly in a story is more important than like. having a perfectly consistent world forever. a story is meant to make you feel something, not just be wiki fodder

@nightwingojo its a way of saying a narrative is empty and doesn't have a strong enough plot to have its ideas/themes make any sense. It's applied to CSM a lot because the CSM ending (even in the eyes of its defenders) is rushed to all hell. There's simply not enough buildup.

@lilestradiol @itsbasilbasil I hope I'm not alone when I say I have an issue with this modern obsession with magic systems. The main issue is making sure it's consistent and doesn't harm the narrative in some way.

its rly funny and revealing when ppl post like "tips and advice for writers!!!!!" and then the advice is about like, magic systems, medieval hairstyles, how suits of armor function, etc And not like. Narrative, structure, dialog, character, etc. Lmao

This annoys me too, but truth be told the former is much more ‘useful’ advice. It’s hard to give immediately applicable a D.C.ice about something as broad and overarching as ‘character’. But “don’t fuck up suit descriptions” is much easier

Let me be clear. Literature is not sports, if you liked the ending then good, if you didn’t then unfortunate but not wrong for doing so. You’re not a dumbass for disliking nor liking it. People on here are just sheep

themes and messages are delivered through the world & plot. Unless fujimoto’s plan was to beam the emotions he wants us to feel ala the blade runner novels, there’s no other way to get a message across.

@AsgharAbbas123 @Jaereku What the author intends or wants is irrelevant to the quality of their story. The ‘point’ is decided by the text and what the author was going for doesn’t matter at all. Fujimoto could’ve written an ending that better convinced people of what he had in mind.

@Jaereku YESSS, I wish more people realized this, when people are complaining about the missed character arcs, I can't help but feel that yeah, technically you are right but... Aren't you like, kinda missing the point or the thing that Fujimoto wants to exactly address?

The thing about Chainsaw Man is that it is fundamentally about the unravelling of one boy’s deep-seated complexes and addictions. It’s not a sprawling narrative juggling multiple character arcs, even if it necessarily dons the trappings of one

@disrupthehuman @MagmaSlasher your argument is “since the story states its messy even the largest incongruences can be forgiven”. I don’t think this is true. Messiness’ implies that the power’s output is weird around the edges, not that it will randomly develop the ability to rewrite time.

@MagmaSlasher the internal logic is followed! the story explicitly tells you that it's messy and can't be predicted. that's the internal logic. you are suffering from scaling and power system thinking and its time to grow from that. i promise stories will be more worthwhile.

No it’s because the point of contemporary public art is not to either reproduce that which is real (made obsolete by the camera) or to propagandize the ruler (verboten in a republic) but to provide artists free reign to create non-commercially successful art
Possum Reviews@ReviewsPossum

I've been saying this for years. The reason public art is so ugly now is it's meant to erode your pride in your community and culture so those in power can reshape it with minimal resistance.
