🚨New paper released today: 10 Common SEN Mis(Interventions)—An Evidence Summary steplab.co/news/common-se… Supporting students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) is a vital and growing challenge for schools. But it’s not straightforward. Learning is complex, marketing claims are confident, and the evidence is often hard to access. As a result, we can sometimes end up adopting approaches which are less effective than we initially think. For some, this may well be uncomfortable reading. As a profession, many of us have put time, effort and belief into these things, and lots will have seen students who looked like they were getting something from it. However, it’s essential that we temper our intuition with evidence, because ultimately: our most vulnerable students deserve it. This new paper co-authored with @Barker_J is an attempt to raise the visibility of the best available evidence around several commonly used SEN interventions. For each, we provide an overview of what the research says, offer a more informed approach, and provide a suite of rigorous links to help you get started. We hope it will serve as a useful resource and over time: push us to be even more 'evidence demanding' as a profession. As ever, let me know what you think. At bedtime the 8 yo told me his teacher said: "Think of your mind like a pond full of fish and each fish is a feeling. Try to be the pond, not the fish." And all I can say is primary school has significantly improved.

Watched University Challenge with my dad last night for the first time in about 20 years. Was pleased with myself for getting the maths questions right. Then I remembered I am a professor of mathematics. Took the shine off.

So you've just stolen 12 tons of KitKats. You are going to a. Sell it on the black market for a massive mark-up b. Stash it in the bunker for end of days prep c. Construct a Kit Kat Club out of actual KitKats d. Not sure... Did not fully think this through

@kennygfrederick ‘We don’t do noisy SEND’. ‘We are very strict so if your child isn’t very well behaved we will be in regular contact’. ‘If your child can’t read this passage of text when they arrive they won’t be able to access the curriculum’. We don’t do that reasonable adjustment’. Etc etc

One school I know had in their SEND policy on their website “if your child has SEN then this school is not the one for you.”. I reported them to LA & Ofsted but as far as I know nothing was done to address it. They received and Outstanding from Ofsted!

Always worth reading any thoughts from @ModernCassie . I am still digesting the White Paper but these reflections align with mine
