I mean, are kids really this soft?!
We expect less out of this generation than any previous one.
I don’t buy this way of thinking.
I think the reality is the TEACHER is done.

@ModestTeacher They’re exhausted and burnt out

@ModestTeacher My friend’s daughter watched Forrest Gump in U.S History a couple weeks ago. That’s a long movie.
English

@LordGem3 No, what a silly idea that no one is suggesting.
English

@ModestTeacher So, we should go back to ink quills? Because there isn't great evidence to support the idea that pencils are wholistically better than ink quills in terms of Iong term outcomes, right?
Once upon a time we hand copied books, should we do that again?
English

Hard disagree. I think almost every major problem facing education has been caused by or exacerbated by the pervasiveness of technology in classrooms.

3 things removing screens from schools will not fix: 1. Reading scores. They were falling before cell phones became common in elementary classrooms. 2. Student motivation. A bored student with a Chromebook is still a bored student without one. 3. Chronic absenteeism. Taking away screens may reduce distractions, but it doesn't solve the reasons most students are absent. Screens may be a problem, but they are becoming a convenient scapegoat to cover up declining student achievement.

@ModestTeacher How hard is it to come up with productive tasks at the end of the year? My students are writing skits to perform, doing a science fair, having a writer’s party to share their writing portfolio, and participating in a talent show. We are writing letters to incoming 5th graders…
English

@LordGem3 It will continue to change and evolve, and salesmen will continue to push every new iteration of it as a panacea to solve education’s problems with zero evidence to support the claim.
English

@JoshieG9 Yes, it’s an issue. Teach. Do something constructive. They didn’t just march the Trail of Tears!
English

@ModestTeacher Honestly it is 6 days left. Is there an issue? At least here in TX, we spent the last 3 weeks of April STAAR testing and prepping. Then a week of EOY MAP testing, iReady diagnostic, etc. They need a breather.
English

@BDailey222 Fair enough but the data is still informative and it doesn’t paint a pretty picture.
English

@ModestTeacher Exactly the opposite, this is what happens when you have bad technology because you haven't developed a native ecosystem from first principles that gives teachers their energy back.
Technology is here to stay, we live in that world now.
English

Great, but also not great.
Kids don’t hangout, cruise town, go to the mall, or swipe a few wine coolers from mom.
They sit at home and stare at a screen.

@ModestTeacher We're closer in time to Cleopatra than Cleopatra is to the pharaohs who built the pyramids.

We are closer in time to the T-Rex than the T-Rex is to the Brontosaurus.
