In addition to the ideology of open-source and the social welfare behind, here is what will happen to their business: 1. Hardware and infrastructure (NVIDIA, Dell) >> NVIDIA sells GPUs. Open models strongly stimulate demand for local/private cloud/edge inference and continuous fine-tuning, directly driving up GPU sales. >> If models become highly concentrated in the hands of OpenAI and Anthropic, inference will increasingly happen in their clouds, shrinking NVIDIA’s “selling shovels” opportunity. 2. Cloud (Microsoft, IBM) >> Their real money comes from hosting a wide variety of models. Open models allow customers to run Llama, Mistral, and others on Azure, reducing single-vendor lock-in to OpenAI while increasing Azure usage. 3. Core open-ecosystem players (Meta, Hugging Face, Mistral, Linux Foundation, Mozilla) >> Meta: The Llama strategy is fundamentally about turning the model layer into “Android”. Like making the model free or cheap so that value concentrates on Meta’s social platforms, advertising, data, and applications. >> Hugging Face monetizes model hosting, tools, and community; Mistral is itself an open-model company; the Linux Foundation and Mozilla have missions tightly tied to the open ecosystem. Growth in open weights directly grows their businesses. 4. Enterprise software and data platforms (Palantir, ServiceNow, Box, CrowdStrike) >> These companies’ customers (governments and large enterprises) fear data leakage and vendor lock-in the most. Open weights allow models to run inside the customer’s own environment, be deeply customized, and audited 5. VC (Andreessen Horowitz, Y Combinator, Emergence Capital) >> AI startups in their portfolios would burn cash extremely quickly if they could only use expensive closed-source APIs >> This also directly improves the success rate and returns of their investment portfolios.

Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty.
