Trump: It’s non monetary tariffs.. They drop the bowling ball on the top of your car from 20 feet up in the air and if there's a little dent they say no, I'm sorry, your car doesn't qualify

President Trump, "The European Union put non monetary tariffs" "They make it so difficult, the standards, and the tests" "They come up with rules and regulations that are just designed for one reason, so you can't sell your products in the EU countries" "They make barriers so tough that it's impossible to qualify"

The U.S. trade relationship with Europe has long been unbalanced, with EU tariffs on American goods like autos averaging 10% compared to the 2.5% U.S. levy on European imports. This asymmetry contributed to the $200 billion EU trade surplus with America in 2024. The America First Investment Policy Memorandum rightly prioritizes reciprocity, using tools like CFIUS to block adversarial investments while fast-tracking allies who demonstrate fair practices. The United States Reciprocal Trade Act empowers targeted tariff responses to level the playing field—a necessary corrective when partners exploit open markets. While the strategic goal of rebalancing trade is sound, the 2025 global tariff rollout faced criticism for formula errors that inflated rates beyond reciprocal levels. Precision matters: tariffs should pressure unfair practices without sparking unnecessary trade wars. Europe’s protectionist policies demand firmness, but calibrated responses ensure American workers and industries benefit without collateral economic damage.

Reporter: Elon Musk has mentioned zero tariffs between the US and Europe. Trump: Europe made a fortune with us. Europe has also had a tremendous surplus with the United States. Europe is a little smaller but they treated us very badly, China has but Europe has also. Europe has been very bad to us.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick just exposed a method foreign countries have used for decades to cheat the United States in trade. "Some countries have a value-added tax and they take that VAT tax of 20% and they use it to subsidize the production of their domestic industries. That's why we can't sell cars there because they give a rebate." And these countries have the gall to act shocked that the United States is finally acting.
