Fun Warhammer 40,000 lore fact:
Bolters. I love bolters. You love bolters. Everyone loves bolters. Even filthy heretics love bolters. Hell some Xenos species (shout out to my boys the Kin) love bolters. But do you know all the fun facts about bolters?
Time for some fun facts about bolters:
1) Bolters have some basis in real world technology. Explosive ammunition is nothing new in firearms with high explosive bullets being in use for ages, but rocket ammunition only ever saw experimentation in the Gyrojet. While the idea was interesting, the gun never found use because it's ammunition needed to gather speed after firing. This left the gun lacking lethality at close range, and the spin the rocket motor imparted on each shot could be uneven and lead to inaccuracy.
Bolters avoid this problem by having bolts first fire out of a brass case imparting lethal, armor piercing velocities immediately. The rocket motor kicks in second, imparting greater muzzle energy.
2) Bolter calibers vary. The Godwyn pattern, used by most Space Marine chapters, is .75 caliber. The Phobos pattern, the one widely produced during the Horus Heresy, shares this caliber as do most other Astartes variants. However the Tigris Pattern from the Horus Heresy, utilized primarily by the Traitor Legions, is a .60 caliber variant. The Godwyn-De'az pattern wielded by the Sisters of Battle is most likely a similar caliber.
Bolters built for humans without power armor also tend to be smaller in caliber, as they lack the strength assistance to handle the recoil of what's essentially a 20mm cannon in assault rifle form. The closest thing we can approximate a human scale bolter to is the AR-15 chambered in .50 Beowulf, a round designed to kill engine blocks.
3) Now all that is interesting, but where did the bolter come from? Legends say the Emperor himself designed the weapon for use by the Space Marines, but common sense points out that STC blueprints for bolters have been found on other worlds beyond Terra. What we do know for certain is the bolter is the second primary weapon for Space Marines. Originally the budding Astartes Legions utilized Volkite weapons, but for the scale of galactic war the Emperor was planning the highly expensive energy rifles were too impractical. Bolters became the primary weapon of the Astartes due to being easier to craft, maintain, and supply with ammunition for the Legions.
4) The bolter's role as the primary weapons of the Emperor's chosen warriors, Astartes or Sororitas, has given the bolter a mythical quality among the average Imperial citizen. Imperial law decrees a citizen may not own one of these holy weapons, and only military rank or special authorization can grant you access to one legally.

Legendary game. First game me and my fiancee played together. Can't get her to play it again though lol.
Also, I got it for free because a Gamestation employee mistook me for a shoplifter and got me wrongfully banned lol
