@AaronHectorCFP I've told clients "these haven't changed my entire career, so they're obviously overdue to be adjusted to inflation. Didn't know it was since 1978. Wow!

The CPP death benefit has been capped at $2,500 since 1997. Due to inflation, now in 2024 $2,500 is now worth only $1,405 in 1997 dollars, a 44% reduction in real purchasing power.

@mgdeez11 Very unpopular. Though I do wonder why that's not an option

If I could contribute more to CPP, or top up my lower income years to get the max, I absolutely would.

@MarkMcGrathCFP @5L4P57R4 Just this "one thing" has dramatically reshaped the path to retirement planning ... I am 56 with two kids at home (ages 19 and 22) 🐤🐤 This is not the life my mom had!

How to fail in retirement planning: 1) buy too much house with too much debt 2) don't buy disability insurance 3) start saving in your 50s 4) try to make up for lost time with high-risk investments 5) prioritize gifting to your kids instead of worrying about yourself 1st

I'm actually not entirely opposed to this. A cap on tax-free gains for principal residences of $250k or $500k per person is not unreasonable IMO. I will hide under this table now and wait for the angry responses

@LizSimmie @AravindSitham My point here is "waitlist of 300" may be essentially meaningless. There may be 300 parents who, at one time, put their names forward for spaces. Those families mostly found other solutions & many of the kids may have aged out. There are waitlists, but they are unquantifiable

@LizSimmie @AravindSitham Having been a daycare treasurer for 4 years I can tell you the waitlists are NOT managed; no incentive. When you can fill any spot with the desperate parent who calls you on the same day someone announces their kid's departure, no one is going back to the binder full of names

Coming off the heels of yesterday's daycare post: Waitlist for the daycare down the street from me that does the $10 a day program. Infants: 500+ Toddler: 300+ Preschool: 300+ 😱 If you plan on having kids - plan and budget your childcare well in advance.
