Someone has suggested I create a thread containing some of my explainer threads. A meta explainer thread, if you will...😁 They cover both science and UK politics. I hope others continue to find them useful. I'll update this as and when I do more of them👍 🧵of 🧵s

@MonkEmma Hi Emma, Welcome to the rapidly growing club .... .... of responders not a single one of whom, despite an excess of pontification, has been able remotely to fault my reasoning in respect of that Guardian headline! theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/m…

Thoughts and prayers to all the muppets who have spent all day saying: “Yeh well, if it’s the hottest day since 1922, then it’s no big deal cos it was hotter back then” One day, they’ll get it…🙄🤷🏼‍♀️
Met Office@metoffice

Today has been the hottest day in May on record with Kew Gardens provisionally reaching 34.8°C - exceeding the previous highest May temperature in the UK by a full 2 degrees Celsius🌡️ This heat would be exceptional in the UK even in mid summer, let alone in May📈

@MonkEmma @Katie_Lam_MP I would still query 10, for the DWP to state it for 10 people? but that's beside the point. Personally, I don't agree with it because I don't agree with recognising polygamy, but people really should do a bit of homework before jumping on the bandwagon.

Polygamy has never been normal in Britain. And yet the Government has just committed to giving even more taxpayer money to people in polygamous marriages. If you come to this country, you should abide by our norms. You certainly shouldn't get paid extra for failing to do so.

@WasAcop To be fair, the previous record was also broken at 13 different sites across the South East. Yes, Heathrow was one of those places, but you really can blame runways and jet engines for the other 12!

@MonkEmma @Katie_Lam_MP Precisely, at pensionable age, although I can't confirm the exact number of 10. Its in the DWP benefit rates document that is released every year for the rate increases/changes. It seems people sometimes just think things are good bandwagons without any idea of reality/1/2

As you say “when a computer does it” That’s the point. The human isn’t an artist in that case. A human drawn photorealistic image is art. And the awe and wonder of it is based on the skill, and the years of practice and dedication needed to create something amazing. No one cares if the same thing can be done by AI. It’s meaningless Art isn’t the final product.

@DynamiteHausen And what do you suppose other artists are doing when they use 10 different things made by others as reference or inspiration for what they make? Its literally no different when a computer does it. Get over yourself. Art is in the eye of the beholder, not your selfish gatekeeping.

@metoffice It hit the same back in 1922? What’s the excuse that caused that then?

@MonkEmma @MalcolmRaw99915 @harhanaky I can to post to you on a previous thread as you successfully blocked me on the last one as you knew you couldn’t win the argument. Now I am crying with laughter at this comment too! You don’t think we had heatwaves in the 70s/80s? How old are you?

The whole thing abt europeans complaining abt the heat is that it isn't supposed to get this hot yet. Or even in summer. It's climate change. Which was supposed to be slowed down by now but here we are because the rich just HAVE to train goddamn AI with the last of our water <3

@_BartRoberts @speakoutsister Liverpool Street women’s toilets on Saturday morning. 2 cleaners. One male and one female. Cleaned individual cubicles as they became available and then pointed them out to women in the queue as they finished. They don’t shut the whole area for cleaning!

@speakoutsister There are plenty of Male cleaners that clean women’s toilets. They just hang a sign on the door to say “cleaning” like they have for the entirety of my life 🤣

"There shouldn't actually be male toilet cleaners". Apparently cleaning toilets is women's work? The feminism is positively invisible.

@harhanaky The problem with Europeans is they dont have air conditioning. Temperatures across North America routinely exceed the temperatures you consider hot. Enjoy the nice weather and if you get too hot buy an AC unit.

You lived on one working class wage and had enough for holidays, computers and computer games, a Reader’s digest subscription etc. It’s such nonsense to pretend you “did without” things that didn’t exist then. If they’d existed those would have been the “nice treats” you had too.

@Stuff_by_Aaron I think it would be enough. I’ve if people lived the same way (nit that I am necessarily saying they should). No phones, no streaming services, almost no going out, limited variety of food, almost no luxuries etc.

I was young in the 80s/90s in the UK. I don’t remember my parents ever going out to eat, except when we were on holiday (in the UK). I don’t think they ever took me to a fast food restaurant, or ordered takeaway food. People today have no clue how working people lived. /1
Raven@raven_brah

Boomers seem to forget that fast food used to be a normal, everyday expense for them because it was affordable. You could get a burger easily on minimum wage, it wasn’t some fancy treat you had once a year as a reward for pulling yourself up by your bootstraps.
