@r1nceaux I can relate, please do not act upon them but know that ideation is normal in bad times but they will pass as life gets better.

@Known2Cali4nia Actually finishing a book instead of reading at most half and then starting a new one, or better yet not letting them sit there for hours on a day i plan to read.

@Known2Cali4nia Uneventful, lack of energy to read. At most I saw a bad horror movie (torrented)

Perhaps it is because the game requires a sort of...inordinate amount of human capital, to the degree a state may see it as wasteful to develop in such a precarious situation. After all, who needs Go/Baduk when you have nukes?

Conversely, one would expect a North vs South Korean Go/Baduk rivalry however no such thing exists. South Korea is a powerhouse in the game, albeit a declining one imo, yet its major competitor is China. North Korea doesn't care. A Cold War rivalry declined, tragic.

Chess gets the focus of Cold War diplomacy yet for Asia Go/Weiqi/Baduk served that role. So eager to compete the Chinese Weiqi Association(中国围棋协会)recognized the Nihon Kiin and vice versa before their own governments recognized one another. It was a diplomatic channel.

There was no malice, as Japanese player Fujisawa Shuko had traveled to China (and Korea, but that's another story/player) to teach. A student of his, Nie Weiping, had finally defeated Japan in the China-Japan Go Tournaments making the game immensely popular nationwide overnight

I'm glad Chen Yi saved Weiqi from being targeted during the cultural revolution and promoted the game. However one could claim developing Weiqi was akin to developing a specialized industry, they had difficulty creating a ranking system, training, beating strong Japanese players.

What feelings, sensations, ideas, and images do I evoke? How do you relate the impression I make on you to yourself? What assumptions do you make about me? How has being exposed to me affected you?

@W0tch1ng I would say why not give learning it another shot? Surely that feeling and draw you have is still there.

@Monodorah I was drawn to China because of its enormity, the fact that within the same country you have places as backwards as africa and places as modern as Europe, and various ethnic groups too. It seemed like a place that could offer me adventure without needing to visit literally africa

I find it rather sad how some online become incredibly condescending and interrogative when I say "I'm studying Mandarin." They'll ask why, they'll ask why not Japanese, and ultimately launch into a geopolitical tirade or some 2010 era chauvism about manufacturing quality.

@W0tch1ng The character based system is a joy. The sound of the language I find pleasant. Chinese people themselves who I've grown up around or met online are very friendly. I tried Japanese for a bit, the inconsistent character rules and grammar annoyed me (still a nice language).

@W0tch1ng For me it was its connections to hobbies, whether it be my interest in its ancient history and modern history, tea (I used to be really into tea, my heart makes this untenable now), Weiqi, and I found the language itself incredibly fun to learn.

Uhm it's called orientalism, we've had it for centuries now. Let me engage in mine. I'm not here to discuss TFR or ballpoint pen manufacturing capability (well, maybe on occasion but not this one).
