@Corbzor @AlchemicRaker Oh, how exactly do you determine the effectiveness of an OD&D nonhumanoid monster's attack on a player character?

@Monsters_Mazes @AlchemicRaker By Weapon vs Armor do you mean the Man-To-Man table? That by definition, and use, wouldn't apply to any non humanoids.

I can see that this is going to be an evergreen thread. Chainmail is NOT just "mass combat" rules; it contains the entire base rules for the small scale dungeon "skirmish" combat that D&D is known for even today. OD&D just added a d20 variant for rolling hits.

The prevailing belief is that the ACS included in OD&D replaces Chainmail. What is missed is that the "normal" combat system in Chainmail is its Mass Combat, while the derived systems are given clear titles like "Man to Man".🧵

@AlchemicRaker @Corbzor Your example is entirely situational and limited. The horse needs a rider and can only attack footmen. Try again.

@Javelin2156 "When you want your cleric to try to Turn Undead, just tell your Dungeon Master "I’ll Turn the Undead.”" ~ 1983 Mentzer Basic Basically, you can attempt once per round in lieu of an attack or spell. It's a special ability, as opposed to a spell-like ability.

@Javelin2156 "When a cleric encounters an undead monster, the cleric may attempt to "Turn" (scare) the monster instead of fighting it." ~ B/X "When a cleric encounters an undead monster, the cleric may either attack it normally (with a weapon or spell), or try to turn it." ~ Rules Cyclopedia

Question for the B/X experts (I’m a little rusty with some of the rules): a cleric turning undead can only do so ONCE per encounter for each type of undead they face. It’s not an attempt per round. Correct? I don’t see this specifically stated in the tomes.

@lemurific @Javelin2156 Not quite... "If you try to turn >a specific< undead monster (for instance, >one specific< vampire) and fail, you cannot try again to turn it in the same fight. At some later encounter, you can try to turn that individual again." ~ it refers to a target that was singled out.

@Javelin2156 Rules Cyclopedia p14 says one attempt per individual per encounter and you can try again in a subsequent encounter.

@rexdreyv2 @ClownWorld "Bottom ranked state in IQ" ~ neat, would you mind sharing what that IQ number is compared to the national average? Now, as far as GDP...I'm just gonna ask for a source.

This book, and the Endless Quest series in general, were so popular for TSR they were published in many international editions. Here are a few of them. Dungeons of Dread was released in L'antro del terrore (Italian) A caverna do terror (Portuguese) Las cavernas del terror (Spanish) Le Donjon de l'effroi (French) Die Höhle des Ungeheuers (German) Makyuu no tatakai [魔宮のたたかい] (Japanese) Przerażający Loch (Polish) Tumnitsata na uzhasa [Тъмницата на ужаса] (Bulgarian)

“Dungeons of Dread”, 1982, was TSR’s first D&D Choose Your Own Adventure book. Written by Rose Estes, and with a brilliant cover painted by Larry Elmore. HOWEVER, these books also had a goldmine of interior illustrations often forgotten or buried in un-chosen paths. Here is a gallery of the sketches in this one done by the late Jim Holloway. How spoiled we were, to have sparks like this for the imagination on every other turn of the page.

I can't think of a fantasy RPG world more developed that Forgotten Realms. Lots of deep lore (and products). By contrast, Greyhawk more barebones, leaving it to DMs to develop. I've run Forgotten Realms because of all the material available for it

I won't play a game with freeze time. Play should dictate the passage of time. And, A DM should be free to skip entire months so PCs can do things like build domains. I am not going to report in about how we grated the road surface and then come back next week to start stage on of paving by spreading gravel.
