Waxing (and waning) poetic about baseball. Toxicly stoic Mariners fan. Noted John Stanton enabler. Prospect hugger. Chaos ball enjoyer. Dueness believer. ⚾✖️🌘

An MLB org watched years of: -in-season TrackMan -biomech -pitch-by-pitch command volatility -health markers -hitter-adjusted outcomes -minor league looks -actual game plans vs real lineups …and TJStats is like “Yeah but look at this 17 spring innings and these colorful blobs.”

A holiday stasis is slowly coming to an end for the Hot Stove season, and action around the infield market could signal a much-anticipated move for the Mariners. More from @A_Jude: st.news/45M2Znp

Because former players are talking about this and getting it wrong again: Pitch velocity is tracked on a consistent basis 2008-pres., and the avg 4sm FB has gone from 91.9 to 94.5 in that time. It's not a tech change. It's reflecting the truth that more pitchers throw hard now.

@DarrenTrain @BrashFan Will be interesting. Players have historically only won 43% of arbitration cases and that number keeps getting worse. Recent years as low as 33%

@MoonlightMLB @BrashFan Wow maybe if the Tigers offered $22-23M they would have won. Skubal is close to an unprecedented value in the Arb era and it is 2026 for the first time. I think he gets it. Yes a lot of pressure on that arbiter vs. say Bryce Miller. lol

@DarrenTrain @BrashFan I'm very curious how it turns out. No Arb player has ever received $20m. Asking for $32m is an unprecedented jump so idk how the arbiter actually awards that to Skubal but it'll be fun to see

Here's Mariners actual Arb numbers vs projections. Bryce's number could be $400k less if he loses his arbitration hearing.

@PatrickFancher I would think they already would have if it was happening this offseason, but maybe mid season or next offseason 🤞

@thejagepage Guess it doesn't matter much he won't be making much more than league min but a little 50-70k raise doesn't hurt

With the formal arbitration deadline at 1pm EST today (real deadline at 8pm EST) - here is a quick snapshot of the Mariners arbitration eligible players, and their projections from both MLBTR and Spotrac.

@CoachCrazy It's a risk but that's literally what they said about Yamamoto. Teams have enough data to have a decent idea how that player will translate to MLB. It may have simply been his elbow injury was enough to scare them off. Also year 1 for a Japanese position player is a down year.

@MoonlightMLB Do you really want to sign an unproven player to a 4-year deal at that AAV, though? I'd rather have more leverage with trade pieces and get something better in-season.

The thing I like about Donovan is the floor is pretty high and he could always play LF in 2027 if the young guys emerge. The thing I like about Geno is he hits for power, good vibes, and I don't have to give up prospects
M00NL1GHT@MoonlightMLB

Okamoto made a lot of sense for the Mariners. Solid contact but will power from the right side. Versatile. Now options seem to be either contact hitting OBP guy in Donovan where we have to trade good prospects, or signing a power hitting but very streaky and K-prone Geno for $

@MoonlightMLB Is this some kind of reverse psychology play or am I instituting a “don’t talk til mariners season?”

@seaj253 I don't know why the tigers would trade him and he fills the same role as Dom albeit with a lot more confidence. I would welcome it tho it seems unlikely

@MoonlightMLB I know two trades mean depleting the prospect pool probably more than Jerry is comfortable with and I know there is a need for another RHB but does Kerry Carpenter make any sense in addition to Donovan?
