I did not learn how to become an electrical engineer in two weeks. Because it only took me one

@MorganCatha @blind_via Yes. Thankfully KiCAD is catching up. I believe the roots of this ability started around v5, and by v7 it started to become really useable. We're now at KiCAD 10 and it's worth a revisit by anyone who hasnt used it in a while. Give it a try, v10 is powerful and fresh out the oven

There are pros and cons to each method. Which side are you on, do you want a dedicated padstack system for your PCB libraries, or editable on the fly padstacks?
Anas Malas@AnasYMalas

@MorganCatha @blind_via You like the padstack editor and padsrack file concept? That was one of the big things that made me absolutely miserable while working on Allegro. Worst 6 months of my life

A mathematician has posted a nice compliment regarding you and your EE brethren, @MorganCatha .
Mathelirium@mathelirium

Even as a Mathematician, I have to say Electrical Engineers impress me in a way few professions do. For me, it's just the way they use Mathematics so naturally, so practically, and so comfortably to build real things like hardware and systems. Even if someone never becomes an Engineer, there is still something worth borrowing from the Engineering mindset: Work with reality, test ideas, accept imperfect models, and keep refining until something useful emerges. One concept that really stuck with me from my Engineering Optimization course was Space Mapping. You keep a cheap coarse model, fᶜ(x), that runs fast but is only an approximation, and a costly fine model, fᶠ(x), that is much closer to reality. Then you construct a mapping, P, so that fᶜ(P(x)) tracks fᶠ(x) where it matters. Most of the optimisation happens on the cheap side, and the fine model is used carefully and sparingly. So, you do not wait for a perfect description of the world before you begin. You start with what you have, understand its limits, and still find a way to make it useful. John Bandler, a Canadian engineer and professor, formalised this in the early 1990s and showed you could make full-wave electromagnetic optimisation practical rather than masochistic. He founded Optimization Systems Associates in 1983 to commercialise the idea, and in 1997 Hewlett-Packard bought the company and folded its tools into what became HP EEsof, then Agilent, now Keysight’s RF design stack. #SpaceMapping #EngineeringMindset #ComputationalElectromagnetics #RFDesign #Optimization

@MorganCatha @blind_via -Can I edit pads as I like in KiCAD, per layer, including all things like thermal spokes, antipads, etc: Yes -Does KiCAD have the concept of each pad being its own FILE, and having a dedicated window to manage pad shapes: No (it doesnt need it) KiCAD, like Altium, does it right

@MorganCatha as far as KiCAD doing dedicated padstack objects, I don't know. If you find a way to do it. let me know.

@AnasYMalas @blind_via Idk if it needs to be a separate file, but you need to be able to edit the padstacks. Like I said, last time I used kicad, it didnt have that capability. Maybe things have changed since then

@MorganCatha @blind_via Can you elaborate? I dont think your statement is true. Ive talked with many serious PCB designers who use software that does not have a dedicated padstack editor that requires one file per padstack used in a footprint. To be honest, my understanding was that this is antiquated

You KiCAD PCB lovers out there. You should show some appreciation to AutoDesk for killing Eagle by purchasing it. The community that currently loves KiCAD previous gave their hearts away to Eagle. I was there, all the entry level hobby beginner PCB guys wanted Eagle. not anymore

I have reason to believe that leading edge logic node will go way down in cost and way up in capacity in 2028/2029 Assuming I’m right about this (~75% confidence rn), there’s probably going to be enormous demand for chiplet integration

Well, see, that is how I went about it. I asked him specific questions about areas that I knew would require specific considerations out of experience. He failed to provide anything of substance and had us start moving into routing. Then realized I was right, and went back to it after we had already gotten far enough along to waste time. LOL

I asked the EE what his PCB Layout Requirements were, and he hands me the answers he got from Claude. Get the feeling this guy has never made out a PCB of this magnitude before. I'm not saying you shouldn't consult AI on stuff, but I have to smack it a few times when I know it's wrong about something, and that happens fairly often.

@blind_via At higher frequencies its all about physical geometry of the transmission line so you just have to design it explicitly

@MorganCatha oh yea? higher frequency generally plays a role in what way? the lack of components or something else?

Idk why gas prices are so culturally salient in america. You could drive an hour a day and it probably comes to less than $3k/year. Is it because they put the price on billboards along the road?
