Trust Wallet Browser Extension Incident Highlights Risks in Software Wallets In late December 2025, @TrustWallet experienced a major security breach affecting its Chrome browser extension (version 2.68). A malicious update, released around December 24, contained hidden code that silently extracted users' decrypted seed phrases after wallet unlock. This led to unauthorized drains totaling approximately $7 million across multiple blockchains, including #Bitcoin, #Ethereum, and Solana. The incident was first flagged on Christmas Day by on-chain investigator @zachxbt, with drains occurring rapidly once seed phrases were exposed. The breach stemmed from a supply-chain compromise, where attackers inserted a backdoor that sent sensitive data to a fake domain mimicking Trust Wallet's analytics server. Investigations suggest the attackers prepared as early as December 8, implanting the code by December 22. Trust Wallet quickly released a patched version (2.69) on December 25, urging users to update immediately. The mobile app and other platforms were unaffected. Affected #wallets with exposed seed phrases are considered permanently compromised, as attackers now hold the recovery phrases. However, Trust Wallet and Binance founder @cz_binance confirmed full reimbursement for victims via the company's support process, drawing from resources like Binance's #SAFU fund. This event underscores #vulnerabilities in software-based wallets: even popular ones can be hit by supply-chain attacks, malicious updates, or code compromises, exposing seed phrases stored in the app environment.
