The attack resulted in 5 deaths and at least 21 severe injuries, many of them clergy, church servants, and religious students. The historic church, one of the principal monasteries in the region, is known for its centuries-old religious significance and for housing historical records and the tombs of Ethiopian monarchs, including Emperor Baeda Maryam. The site also serves as a center for Abinet religious education, where many Orthodox theological students study. The shelling caused widespread panic at the monastery, forcing religious students and residents in the area to flee. Several victims reportedly suffered severe injuries, including amputations. Local sources described the attack as part of a pattern of violence targeting Amhara communities and religious institutions in the region.
