The Michigan shooter who attempted to murder toddlers at a Jewish preschool claimed he had lost “family members” in an Israeli strike in Lebanon. Those “family members” were his brothers, who were members of Hezbollah, a U.S. Designated Terror Group.

Yesterday’s attack on the Jewish community in West Bloomfield hit incredibly close to home. I am beyond grateful that no one was hurt and that the children, staff, and families at Temple Israel are safe. The courage and quick response of security and law enforcement undoubtedly prevented a tragedy. I was driving down Walnut Lake Road when suddenly police cars, SWAT trucks, and fire engines began racing past me in the opposite direction — dozens of them, coming not just from West Bloomfield but from surrounding cities. At least 30 vehicles. I immediately knew something was very wrong, and it sent chills down my spine. Moments later my phone started blowing up with messages about an active shooter in the area. My heart sank when I learned it was right across the street from our Chaldean community’s Shenandoah Country Club. We love our Jewish neighbors, and I’m proud that Shenandoah opened its doors to help shelter and support families during such a frightening moment. That’s what real community looks like. But I’m still struggling to understand how anyone could believe it’s acceptable to target innocent people simply because of religious differences. Driving a vehicle into a building with the intent to harm others is pure evil. As a mother of three young children, watching the hatred and division spreading across our country — and now appearing in our own backyard — is incredibly difficult. This post isn’t meant to be political. Situations like this should never be politicized.
