JUST IN: Iran revokes residency permits for 1,200 UAE citizens
• Iran’s judiciary said Monday it revoked residency permits for 1,200 Emiratis living in Iran in retaliation for the UAE revoking residency permits for Iranians, and ordered those affected to leave within one week.
• The move follows a sweeping UAE crackdown that has shut down the Iranian Hospital and Iranian Club in Dubai, along with five community schools, the UAE branch of Islamic Azad University, and the Imam Hossein mosque.
• The UAE’s measures have also targeted long-term status, reportedly canceling “Golden Visas” and residency tied to 99-year property leases, leaving many Iranians stranded abroad.
• Iranian media estimates roughly $530 billion in Iranian assets in the UAE including real estate, investments and bank accounts could now be at risk of freezing or confiscation.
• The escalation comes as the UAE formally severed diplomatic ties with Iran on March 29, closing its embassy in Tehran and recalling all staff. Iran has launched hundreds of missiles and drones at the UAE, which has served as a launchpad for U.S. military operations against Iran that have killed more than 3,000 people.
