For our wedding, my wife scored a really good dress that was a fraction of the price of a normal white wedding gown.
To top that off, most of the money was spent on food and the photographer, inviting the bare minimum of people (12), and it was the best time of our lives.

Why is the wedding dress white? Because a queen wore it once - and corporations turned it into a $65 billion obligation. Before 1840, brides wore any color they owned. Red, blue, green - whatever was their best. White showed dirt. It was the last color anyone would choose. Then Queen Victoria wore white to promote British lace-makers. A trade decision. Not a symbol. 9 years later, a magazine declared white had "always" been proper for brides. Fiction. The diamond ring followed the same playbook. In 1940, only 10% of brides received one. De Beers wrote 4 words -"A Diamond Is Forever"- and by 1990, that number hit 80%. The tiered cake? Just a wealth signal. The meaning came after. Today the average wedding costs $34,000. Not because love requires it. Because someone decided you'd pay.
