Happy 208th birthday to Karl Marx! Mountain Caucus celebrates Marx's foundational contributions to socialism, and continues to reflect and build on his legacy in our efforts for a better world.

On this day in 1937, Antonio Gramsci passed away due to mistreatment in Mussolini's prison. He was put there as a political prisoner; his prosecutor pleading to the judge: "We must stop this brain from functioning for 20 years." Gramsci's example is a shining beacon for modern Communism. His principled crusade against the myopia of the Italian left *and* the Italian right, to develop a true Marxist center, is historic. His contributions are permanent. "My belief is simple: I believe that if you beat your head against the wall, it is your head that breaks, and not the wall."

But this potential has been squandered by sellouts like AOC & Mamdani, and the failure of DSA leaders. In Seattle, DSA leadership is blocking a vote on endorsing @cmkshama's independent socialist campaign for Congress. Kshama is a member of DSA. She won four elections to the Seattle City Council as an independent socialist. She has a track record of standing up to both corporate parties and building movements for major victories like the first major-city $15 minimum wage & the Amazon Tax for affordable housing. A victory for Kshama's campaign would be a massive step towards building a new working-class party. We urgently need to get organized as rank-and-file DSA members to reverse the decision by DSA leadership and demand a full debate and vote on endorsing Kshama’s campaign. We urge Seattle DSA members including @cmkshama to mobilize to the local convention THIS SATURDAY, 3/21, where we will be voting on a resolution to allow a debate on endorsing her campaign. As DSA members, we call on DSA nationally to support Kshama Sawant’s independent socialist campaign for Congress, defeat AIPAC-backed Democrat @RepAdamSmith & break the socialist movement away from the Democratic Party. We regret, however, that the chapter has made undue exceptions to these deadlines in the past. This is no reason to expand on such an error. We ask that in the future all deadlines be adhered to. Healthy deliberative democracy demands nothing less.

Moreover, Sawant has demonstrated a lack of cooperation w/ DSA. Despite this, she is now asking for aid in a resource intensive race which previous socialists have not come close to winning. DSA's limited resources would be better spent on running cadre for state & local office.

Mountain Caucus respects the right of Seattle DSA members to petition the chapter to vote on the endorsement of any candidate. However, we cannot support this petition, as the deadline for endorsements has already passed. Members' time and labor must be respected.
