Cattle Rustlers Running Amok in Njanja. The “Steaks” Are High.
Zvichemo, Njanja.
By King Jay ✍️ – #SoulShackRadio Community News.
I am deeply saddened by the rise in cattle theft and illegal slaughter taking place at my ancestral home area in Njanja.
The Berejena family in Zvichemo, about 30km south-west of Sadza Growth Point, woke up to a horrifying sight, several of their cattle had been slaughtered overnight, skinned and stripped of meat before the thieves disappeared into the darkness.
Cattle rustlers are clearly running amok in Chikomba District.
Sadly, this is not a new problem. When I visited home in October 2023, Mama Rose had been fattening a bull ahead of my imminent arrival from London. Every year when I go home she insists on slaughtering a beast in my honour , her way of welcoming me back to the village.
But that year the bull met the same cruel fate before I even set foot back in Zimbabwe. Thieves struck in the dead of night, slaughtered it, stripped the carcass and vanished.
In 2021, respected local teacher Shadreck “Shadhi” Hwature also lost two of his pedigree cows to cattle thieves.
So these criminals have been operating for some time , and they appear to be getting away with it.
I implore the @PoliceZimbabwe Zimbabwe Republic Police at Sadza Police Camp to urgently assemble a dedicated team of investigators to track down those responsible and bring them to justice.
My strong suspicion is that these rustlers are working in cahoots with certain butchery owners. This has all the signs of an organised syndicate.
To get to the bottom of these crimes, investigators must leave no stone unturned, from the crime scenes in the villages to butcheries in Sadza, Nharira, Wedza and beyond.
The police should also unleash PISI , the Police Internal Security and Intelligence unit within the Zimbabwe Republic Police , to investigate possible collusion with rogue officers at roadblocks who may allegedly turn a blind eye when suspicious carcasses are discovered in vehicles, waving them through after a quiet chat and a “sweetener”.
For rural families, cattle represent wealth, security and survival. They provide draught power for land preparation and support entire households.
In the Berejena family’s case, one of the animals slaughtered was an ox , a vital beast for draught power.
These crimes are hurting my beloved Njanja community. They cannot be allowed to continue.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. I am 28. I currently work as a security guard in Qatar. Every morning I put on my uniform and think about the version of me that graduated thinking the world was waiting. Nobody tells you that sometimes the world is not waiting. You just have to keep showing up anyway.

I also had a jam session with the kids from Runyararo, and I was blown away by their talent.
Remember that a project I recorded with them will be launched this week, on Friday, March 13, 2026, at Casino Marina at Longcheng Plaza.

In 2016, a woman in rural Rwanda was hemorrhaging during childbirth. A hospital texted for blood. Minutes later, a Zipline drone launched. 10 minutes after that, it parachuted type O negative to the landing zone. The mother and baby both survived. That system now supplies 75% of Rwanda's blood and has cut maternal mortality by 51%.

@KingJayZim @kudamagezi Yaah the problem is deeper than kombis chaos alone. To solve it you have to holistically address "chakonzera musoro uteme". Its a collapse of the whole ecosystem King

@kudamagezi It’s not excuse to flout the law as well as neglect the public infrastructure that already exists.

#Pause I’ve been rewinding this video with a heavy heart. 😭😢
First Street in Harare was once the pride of the city, clean, tidy, orderly, a pedestrianised stretch where you felt safe just to stroll and breathe it all in.
Growing up, one of the highlights of my weekends was togging up in my best clobber and catching the bus into Berg as we called town.
First Street was where we linked up with connections and dates. 😍😊❤️. Al fresco breakfast at Wimpy, just sitting there watching the world go by. Shoppers moving with purpose, buying the latest gear at Barbours, Sanders, Karl’s Fashions, Josh and Kathy, TV Sales and Hire, and that record bar where Sam Musango held court, smooth as ever, charming the girls without even trying.
December on First Street was something else. Christmas lights glowing above us, late night openings, window shopping even when pockets were light, just soaking in the atmosphere.
The breakdance crews, the roller skaters, the music, the laughter. A world-class vibe that felt organised and proud.
We would detour through Linquenda House and Jameson Parkade, drift into John Lance Men’s Outfitters, Eric Davis, Adam Black, admiring the cuts and the fabrics, dreaming big.
The city felt aspirational. It felt like it belonged to all of us.
So to watch kombis blatantly driving through a pedestrianised street, in broad daylight, flouting bylaws with zero consequence, is painful. It’s more than a traffic violation, it’s a violation of what that space represents to many of us.
Yes, we can point fingers at council @cityofharare2 and the line ministry, and they must enforce the law. But residents also have to take responsibility. We cannot normalise littering, public urination, illegal vending and driving where cars are prohibited. Lawlessness thrives where shame has disappeared.
We need to instil civic pride from primary school right through adulthood. Respect for public spaces must be taught and reinforced. Breaking bylaws should not be seen as clever or convenient, it should be seen as unacceptable.
I agree with Mayor Jacob Mafume @JMafume when he spoke about procuring a crusher for persistent traffic offenders. Fines are ignored. Impoundments don’t seem to bite. Perhaps crushing vehicles that repeatedly violate the law would finally send a message.
In the UK, uninsured vehicles are seized and ultimately crushed if owners fail to comply. There are consequences.
Kombis have become a menace because we have allowed the culture of impunity to grow. That has to stop.
If we want our city back, it starts with accountability, enforcement and a change in mindset. First Street deserves better. Harare deserves better. And so do the generations coming after us.
