@MrHawkeFan

Mugged by reality, refused to press charges. Still enthusiastic about John Curtin. Still want to reform the NDIS. Technocratic populist. Neoliberal socialist.

The Gas Export Levy theory of everything is probably the most annoying aspect of this discourse because its so blatantly ad hoc. Just last week, we were taxing gas exports to fund better public services and expand welfare. Now, we're using it to fuel unsustainable NDIS growth.

160,000 people with disability forced off the NDIS to save money but foreign companies that make around 50 billion profit exporting OUR gas won't be taxed because it's "a difficult time" for them says the PM. You can't make this stuff up.

When I joined twitter it was mostly into LibDem Election Twitter, was in that bubble for a very long time until I got mad and blocked a bunch of people (mostly unblocked now) but so nice to really feel like there is now a Labour ET.

@MakeUSAVAT @MrHawkeFan There are ways to sneakily raise taxes. I just think these are bad taxes. Like yeah all tax increases sound bad but taxing Netflix is mega dumb

@MrHawkeFan @MakeUSAVAT Sin taxes were one example. I think gas taxes are great. Any tax that subsidizes a particular sector is also good. But what do these taxes serve when they will obviously raise marginal revenue but sound bad in a sound bite?

@MrHawkeFan @MakeUSAVAT Of *course* I’d prefer property taxes. Im not just talking about economic efficiency, I’m talking about political liability. We will get shit on for this. Whereas a 1% increase in income taxes is much harder to make ads about. I also clearly said some consumption taxes are good

@MrHawkeFan Both ways are bad. I hate nickel and dime taxes. Also these are just a form of sales tax, which is regressive and stupid when they aren’t used strategically to disincentivize usage. Just raise income taxes.

@actsmaniac I'd argue that this is partially driven by the fiscal drag that resulted from post-GFC austerity. You can make the argument that clamping down on deficit spending had the opposite effect by reducing bond yields, but I still maintain that it was likely a negative long-term.

complaining about austerity in Europe is very 2010s coded, meanwhile in the present France is running a 5% deficit and Germany about 3%. central banks are starting to be worried about high government debt in the Eurozone too
